23/06/2023

The US aviation system is breaking records, with the Transportation Security Administration already reporting passenger volumes greater than pre-pandemic levels during the Memorial Day weekend. Experts are concerned that things might not go smoothly all summer for a system that has seen many meltdowns in the past year and appears to be prone to more.

“We expect the summer travel season to be off the charts when it comes to demand,” says Geoff Freeman, president of the US Travel Association. “That’s great for the travel industry, but there’s no doubt that – as a country – we have underinvested in the aviation system for far too long. This type of demand will be an incredible stress test for it.”

President Biden announced in early May that he is pushing to bolster passenger protection and compensation for delays or cancellations, after the Department of Transportation saw airline passenger complaints rise 55% in 2022.

One of the most pressing issues is a shortage of air traffic controllers – who handle the crucial task of guiding aircraft between and around airports – with a shortfall of about 3,000. As a result, the FAA asked airlines to reduce summer flights in the New York metropolitan area, where a key radar facility is only 54% staffed.
Hiring air traffic controllers requires months of training and then up to three years of on-the-job experience before certification.

Then there’s the issue of age: In the US, air traffic controllers are required to retire at the age of 56, and the FAA won’t hire anyone older than age 31, because they want candidates to have at least a 25-year career path.

“We have 1,200 fewer air traffic controllers today than we had 10 years ago,” says Freeman. “That’s not going to cut it. So we have to make an investment in people.”
Basically, if you have travel plans this summer, plan accordingly.

Marriott International will be expanding its brand with more hotels in Africa. Last week, the major hotel brand signed several new deals in Africa under its Protea Hotels brand, spanning across four countries: Botswana, Ethiopia, Tanzania and Nigeria.

Botswana
Marriott International will expand its presence in Botswana by signing Protea Hotel Serowe. The hotel, scheduled to open in 2026, will feature 155 guest rooms and suites, an all-day-dining restaurant, a fitness centre, a swimming pool, and multiple meeting rooms. Situated near the Khama Rhino Sanctuary in Serowe, the hotel will be between Gaborone and Orapa, one of the world's largest diamond mines.

Ethiopia
Protea Hotels by Marriott will debut in Ethiopia with the conversion of Blue Nile Resort to Protea Hotel Bahir Dar.
The agreement with Blue Nile Resort Hotels includes a full renovation of the property, which is expected to be rebranded by 2025. The hotel will offer 127 guest rooms and suites, multiple dining outlets, a fitness centre, and nearly 1,000sqm of meetings and event space. It is located near Lake Tana and a short distance from the Blue Nile.

Tanzania
Marriott International has agreed with Parklane Holdings Zanzibar Limited to convert its property into Protea Hotel Zanzibar Stone Town.  This project, set to open by the end of 2023, is in Stone Town, a Unesco World Heritage Site and a popular tourist area in Zanzibar.  The hotel will feature 26 guest rooms, an all-day-dining restaurant, and a rooftop bar.

Nigeria
Projected to open in 2027, Protea Hotel by Marriott Abuja Jahi will have 144 guestrooms, two food and beverage outlets, a swimming pool and meeting facilities.  The hotel will be situated in the developing district of Jahi which is northwest of Abuja’s city centre and close to Gwarinpa and Jabi.

Now wait one darn minute…Who put American Airlines up to this?

American Airlines recently announced their new policy that will affect all basic economy flyers. The airline is now charging a $75 Checked Bag Fee for Basic Economy flyers.

According to the airline, this decision aims to create more consistency in the terms of basic economy across its entire network.

In a statement, Andrea Koos, spokesperson for American Airlines, said, “We are simplifying our product offerings to make it easier for customers when they are shopping for travel. With this change, our Basic Economy product will include all of the same features whether a customer is purchasing it for a domestic or international flight.”

Unfortunately, this change won’t benefit customers. It actually increases the cost for those who purchase the cheapest fare ticket from AA and need to check a bag on their longest flights by nearly $100.

Companies like United and Delta provide free first-checked bags on transpacific flights for their basic economy ticketholders.
There are few things more frightening as a traveler than being lost in a remote area.

Ever thought about moving to Ireland?

What if you were paid $90,000 to move?
Ireland has just announced an initiative to revitalize more than 20 of its isolated islands that lie off its western shores.

These grants will be offered to people willing to refurbish vacant or derelict homes and then live in them, with Vacant Home Officers now on the case to identify eligible properties.

"The aim of this policy is to ensure that sustainable, vibrant communities can continue to live — and thrive — on the offshore islands for many years to come," according to the government.

Once the money is granted, it can only be used for redecoration, installing insulation, and structural improvements.

Something else to consider is that while anyone can own property in Ireland, that doesn't necessarily guarantee the right to live in the country.

Thinking about traveling to Louisiana? Well, the NAACP wants you to reconsider.

The NAACP warned people on Wednesday to use extreme caution when visiting Louisiana.
The civil rights organization is calling for a national travel advisory to the state based on what it considers discriminatory legislation approved by state lawmakers.

The NAACP claims the bills have fostered an atmosphere of fear and intimidation that is unsafe for residents and visitors.

“We’re telling everyone, Louisiana is on the verge of sending us back to the boondocks, the darkened days and we don’t want to go back,” said NAACP Louisiana State Conference President Mike McClanahan.

In a letter released on Wednesday, the NAACP cited a list of bills it claims targets marginalized groups such as African Americans, immigrants and the LGBTQ+ community.

Those laws included a proposed ban on gender-affirming medical care for minors and legislation that would allow 17-year-olds, in some cases, to be jailed alongside adults.

“As a native Louisianan, I love this state,” McClanahan said. “But I don’t love what this state does to its own citizens. We want people to know if it does that to its own citizens, it will do it to those who come in and visit.”

Sen. Royce Duplessis, D-New Orleans, called it culture wars legislation seeking to solve problems that don’t exist.

“Conventions and businesses, they look at this type of thing and they say is that the type of place we want to go to do business,” Duplessis said. “In the end it’s unproductive.”

Rep. Ray Garofalo, R-Chalmette, says the bills in question address crime policies and protect children.

“My goal is not to worry about what’s going on and what other people think and what groups like this, that are activists and they’re being active for certain communities,” Garofalo said. “My goal is to look out for people that I represent.”

If you’re considering traveling to the D.R., you may want to read this first!

The Department of State is warning travelers who are traveling to the Dominican Republic to exercise increased caution due to crime and safety concerns.

The D.R. was placed under a Level 2 (out of 4) on the State’s website. The department regularly updates and issues travel advisories for countries all around the globe.

“Violent crime, including armed robbery, homicide and sexual assault is a concern throughout the Dominican Republic,” the State Department wrote in its warning. “The wide availability of weapons, the use and trade of illicit drugs, and a weak criminal justice system contribute to the high level of criminality on the broader scale.”

However, the department did note there was a lower risk in popular resort areas due to “the development of a professional tourist police corps, institution of a 911 system in many parts of the country, and a concentration of resources in resort areas.”

These areas tend to therefore “be better policed than urban areas like Santo Domingo.”

Travelers who do go to the Dominican Republic should be aware of their surroundings, never physically resist any robbery attempt, and avoid displaying signs of wealth (like wearing expensive watches or jewelry).

Travelers can also enroll in the State Department’s Smart Traveler Enrollment Program to receive alerts “and make it easier to locate you in an emergency.”
Recently, the State Department issued advisories for several popular vacation destinations, including certain areas of Mexico, Colombia, and Jamaica.

For the first time in world history, New York topped the charts for the worst air quality in the world. Normally the Air Quality Index is around 50 for NY. Today, Brooklyn measured 413 and Queens at 407.

The poor air quality actually has nothing to do with the U.S. The smoke from ferocious Canadian wildfires are creating a smoky haze over many northern states, worsening air quality for millions of people.

Municipal officials told people to stay indoors and the National Weather Service does not expect things will get much better tomorrow.

Approximately 128 million people were under air quality alerts because of wildfire smoke and ozone in the U.S. Wednesday night. For smoke alone, around 100 million were under alerts across 16 states.

If you’re considering visiting north-eastern states this week, you may want to hold off a bit.

Thinking about going to London? Go for dirt cheap!

Travelers looking for a fall getaway to London have a new option at a great price.

Norse Atlantic Airways, a low-cost carrier based in Norway, announced that tickets are now available on a new Miami to London route, starting at $418 for round-trip service. (The route is via London Gatwick Airport, which is about 1.5 hours outside of London by car and a 45-minute train ride away.)

Although travelers can book their tickets now, the service will not begin until Sept. 18.

The cheap fares are in the discounted “Economy Light” category, which includes only one small under-seat bag and passengers in this category are the last to board. However, travelers can select other fare classes that include carry-on bags, checked bags, meal service, and priority boarding.

The Miami to London nonstop flight — operated on a Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft — is 8 hours and 45 minutes.

Florida is currently dealing with an influx of seaweed washing ashore that is tainted with flesh-eating .

Scientists say the mounds of seaweed washing up on beaches in the Sunshine State contain the Vibrio bacteria. The waterborne bacterium clings to plastic in the water, which in turn gets tangled up in seaweed. Since water pollution continues to be an international issue, Vibrio has become more aggressive, seeking out and sticking to plastic easier.

What makes this more troubling is that a 5,000-mile-wide clump of seaweed known as the “Great Atlantic Sargassum Belt” is currently headed to Florida, posing a severe risk to beachgoers and those who live along the coast. Once the seaweed decays, it emits a strong odor and spreads the bacteria across the sand. This means that those who merely walk on the beach or coastlines are at risk of getting sick.

In more common cases, humans are infected with Vibrio by consuming raw seafood. Symptoms of Vibrio infection include diarrhea, stomach cramps, vomiting, fever, chills, and ear infections. However, those with open wounds that make contact with Vibrio are at risk of contracting necrotizing fasciitis, a potentially deadly flesh-eating disease.

Did you travel anywhere these past few weeks and were annoyed by the long security lines at the airport? If so, then this is for you!

Reserve, which debuted at Orlando Airport, allows passengers that don't have a Clear membership to schedule their spot in a designated security line ahead of time.

Reserve is a free service only available at select airports and requires booking your spot ahead of time. Reserve provides a more predictable experience than standard airport security, but it still requires you to show a TSA officer your ID to verify it's you.

To use the Reserve lane, passengers can select the day and window they would like to reserve their time for standard security, and display a QR code for appointment verification. The service provides a 20 minute window, so there is accommodation if you don’t make your designated appointment time, according to CLEAR’s website.

There are 19 airports around the world that participate, including Denver International Airport which just started testing the program this week.

“Travelers can now save even more time by seamlessly reserving their spot in the security line,” CLEAR’s Executive Vice President of Operations Kasra Moshkani said in a statement to Travel + Leisure. “From Clear Plus to Bag Drop to this new Reserve lane, DEN has been an incredible partner and innovator as we introduce and test new products that transform the traveler experience together.”

Reserve — which is most helpful for passengers who have neither Clear nor TSA PreCheck — is also the following airports in the United States:

* Los Angeles International Airport
* Minneapolis Minneapolis−Saint Paul International Airport
* John F. Kennedy International Airport
* Newark Liberty International Airport
* Orlando International Airport
* Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport
* Seattle-Tacoma International Airport

29/05/2023

The head of the World Health Organization is warning that the next pandemic could be even worse than what we’ve experienced these past 3 years.

WHO director-general Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus urged countries to get ahead of this future pandemic. In other words, have policymakers actually learned their lesson after years of tragic deaths and suffering?

"The threat of another variant emerging that causes new surges of disease and death remains, and the threat of another pathogen emerging with even deadlier potential remains," he said, as quoted by CBS News.

Tedros also noted that COVID — which has killed almost seven million people worldwide — hasn't gone away, but could soon be only one of several emerging threats.

"The end of COVID-19 as a global health emergency is not the end of COVID-19 as a global health threat," he told member states.

"We cannot kick this can down the road," he added. "When the next pandemic comes knocking — and it will — we must be ready to answer decisively, collectively and equitably."

Experts have been warning that human encounters with wildlife could increase the risk of transmitting pathogens from animals to humans, which likely sparked the COVID pandemic.

The list of potential pathogens keeps growing. Since 2009 alone, US scientists have identified more than 900 new viruses, CBS reported last year.

Other experts have also warned that it's not just viruses we should be worried about, pointing at the potential threat of fungi, some of which are capable of infecting people and evading fungicides.

At this week's WHO meeting, Tedros urged countries to reform the way they prepare for these threats.

"If we do not make the changes that must be made, then who will? And if we do not make them now, then when?" he said.

What are your thoughts?

23/05/2023

Hmmmmm…..

A new ridesharing app to compete with Uber and Lyft recently launched in Atlanta and New York. What makes this app, named Black Wolf, stand out? The driver of your vehicle can be armed with a gun.

“What I’m creating is a necessary evil. It’s a necessity,” Black Wolf founder Kerry King Brown told a local news station in Atlanta, Georgia.

Brown’s company launched last week and first gained widespread attention over the weekend after going viral on Reddit. Brown’s service is being sold as “executive protection” for people who are worried about their personal safety, as the country reels from a seemingly never-ending barrage of mass shootings and mundane interactions that quickly escalate into gun violence.

Brown told Atlanta First News that he’s worked as a private investigator and bodyguard and claims many of the drivers who work for the company come from military and security backgrounds. The news outlet even showed a clip of Brown near Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, strongly suggesting Brown worked as a bodyguard for the controversial congresswoman. But, again, Brown has not responded to an email seeking more information.

While looking through the app, which is available for free on Apple’s App Store and Google Play, I was able to see three different services, Armed Executive Protection, Unarmed Executive Protection, and School Executive Protection. The school-based option is being marketed as a way to send children to school more safely.

“Every Black Wolf App vehicle comes equipped with GPS Tracking and Live-streaming technology that allows our riders to share with their loved ones,” the company says on its page.

The Black Wolf rideshare app has social media accounts on major platforms like TikTok, Instagram and Facebook, but it’s not clear yet whether the app has any ambitions to launch in other cities. Uber launched its ridesharing option with just a select number of cities in 2012 but was in 65 regions by the following year
