From The Other Side Gallery of Utica The Other Side-Jazz in Utica Cafe Domenico This Weekend at The Other Side:
Saturday, August 12, 9-5, & Sunday, August 13, 9-2 Mike Haritos, cheese importer and owner of Isle de Formaggio, is back bringing with him his usual awesome selection of imported cheeses and other fine imported food items. With him today also will be Judy Bach of Bach Farms with her high quality locally-raised, grass fed beef pork and lamb, and Kneady Baker Joe Silberlicht with his equally awesome artisanal breads.
And, in-between selecting your cheeses, admiring Joe's breads, and contemplating which meat to buy for your grill, look around and see the transformation that has been wrought in our little space in the last few weeks, under the direction of Art Gallery Director Rainer Wehner.
We think you'll agree that the results are fairly spectacular, especially to take on as the tiny little no-paid-staff not-for-profit we are. Stay tuned, for there is more to come: besides finishing touches to the area around the stairs (under which the piano will be stored), in months to come we will be putting in a lighting system that will work for both artworks and for performances, and will be purchasing a sound system that, together with the changes in the space, will enhance our capacity as a performance and lecture venue.
As is always the case when taking on such projects, especially in old buildings like 2011 Genesee St., there are unforeseen problems to be overcome, and consequently, cost overruns. Which is to say, we are still seeking help to reach our original goal of $6000; that alone would help us greatly and keep our resources in programming where we want to keep them!! This little arts and performance space will continue to make its significant, independent contribution to the cultural scene in the Utica area, which we are able to do thanks exclusively to the generous financial support of our friends and the hard work of our volunteers. Tax-deductible gifts in any amount will be greatly appreciated! If you'd prefer to support our general fund, that's a great help, too. Make checks out to The Other Side, mail c/o Kim Domenico, 17 Grant St., Utica NY 13501, or drop off at the Cafe Domenico. Again, many thanks to all who have already contributed!
And an additional 'bright spot': In these times that are tough on local enterprises and small businesses, don't you think any heartening sign in the scene is especially welcome? We are very pleased that our landlord, Tony Myers, has taken on the completion of the facade improvements to this venerable "anchor" building, 2011 Genesee, in Uptown Utica. His willingness to take on such an investment is due, at least in part, to the presence of the two solid establishments, one for profit, one non-profit, housed in the building at street level. Your patronage of both these establishments helps to keep Uptown Utica alive and vibrant.
