Visited a cool area of badlands outside of Omarama. Lots of fun scrambling around these otherworldly formations. (Fun fact - How Bizarre by OMC is still the biggest hit song to ever come out of New Zealand!)

Lake Hawea. You have probably heard there are more sheep than people in New Zealand. The latest figures say 4.6 sheep per person, however, in 1982 the ratio was 22:1 !!!

Milford Track Day 3 - after a steep 1000m/3281ft descent from the pass, we took a side trail over to Sutherland Falls. At 580m/1903ft it ranks among the tallest waterfalls in the world. We got a good soaking by the powerful spray. Like all epic waterfalls this gets the M83 soundtrack.

Day 3 on the Milford Track starts with a 500m/1640ft climb to the Mackinnon Pass. We got an early start and reached the pass with blue skies and incredible views of the valley we had hiked up and the valley ahead. Incredible start to a big day, to say the least.

The cheeky kea. These large birds are one of the few alpine parrots in the world. They often breed and live high above tree line. They are very inquisitive and intelligent and mischievous. At the huts on the Milford Track, we were warned not to leave anything unattended - the kea often steal food, trash, GoPros (search on YouTube) clothing and they have a thing for absconding with shoes. They definitely entertained us with their antics at the Mintaro Hut.

Day 2 - The Milford Track is known for rain, cloudy weather, and wet trails - we had expected to be wet and cold, but all we got was sun the whole way. A rarity, I believe.

Cloudy, misty, a little rainy, but spirits very high. Finally, we were on our way to the start of the Milford Track! The trailhead is only reached by an hour long ferry along Lake Te Anau. The scenery was beautiful as we cruised by soaring mountains with rain clouds gently rolling over the landscape. We disembarked and set off through the wet, mossy green jungle like forests. The first day of hiking is a gentle (wet) 5km/3miles, but nothing could hold back our excitement being on trail - finally! This trek has been months in the planning - getting a permit was equivalent to winning the lottery! Here we go …
