Are you ready to change careers? Networking could be the key to unlocking new opportunities.

Making a career change can feel overwhelming, but one thing remains constant: people hire people. Strategic networking opens doors, provides insights, and connects you with new opportunities. Here’s how to make networking work for your career transition:

🗸 Research your target industry: Identify key players and organizations. Knowledge is power and makes your conversations more meaningful.
🗸 Engage on LinkedIn: Follow thought leaders, comment on posts, and share relevant content to build visibility and credibility in your new field.
🗸 Request informational interviews: Reach out to professionals and ask about their experiences. Gather insights and advice from others with firsthand knowledge.
🗸 Focus on authentic connections: Networking isn’t just about job leads—it’s about building relationships that create mutual value.

Your next opportunity might be one conversation away. Take a small step today—reach out to someone new and see where it leads. You’ve got this!

My passion lies in empowering clients across various industries and salary levels, whether they’re returning to work or pivoting into a new career. According to the Office of Financial Research, each month approximately 2% of U.S. workers change jobs.
Many of the career changers and job seekers that I work with are seeking a better work-life balance, job satisfaction, and/or salary increase in a new position or career.

When thinking about a career change consider:
💡Interests and Values- what are your interests and work values? Identifying these can lead to identifying potential career choices. What occupations match those interests and values?
💡Transferable Skills- what skills do you have that can transfer easily to other careers?
💡Research- Understand the labor market and typical job requirements. Onetonline.org can be a great starting place for this. What are employers requiring from new hires in your field of interest? A specific degree? A certificate? Experience? Conduct informational interviews- ask employers. This is a great way to build your network in a new field.
💡Experience- if you are light on or have no experience in your new chosen field, consider volunteering or being a subcontractor to gain experience. Again, while gaining experience you will also be building your network.

I don’t advocate choosing a new career based on the advice of someone else’s experience. What works for one person may not work for someone else. We all have different personal, work, and life experiences that shape our preferences, work and learning styles, and values. Incorporate the experience of others into your own research and choose the best career path for you.

Have you successfully transitioned to a new career? Let us know what helped you the most!

Are you someone who wants to return to work after a career break, but fear is holding you back? You are not alone. I have worked with many individuals in your situation who have experienced thoughts such as the following:

☑️ I’m out of touch with new technology.
☑️ I can’t compete with applicants that haven’t had a career break.
☑️ I must switch careers because I can no longer do what I used to do. How do I do that?
☑️ I don’t have recent experience (or any experience) in my new chosen career.
☑️ I’m afraid of networking or don’t know how to begin networking.

Below are several ideas you can implement to assist with overcoming those fears:

☑️ Upgrade your computer skills. Check with local libraries and the job centers in your state to inquire about free courses.
☑️ Visit careeronestop.org and the “find local help” page- this will provide you with information about job centers in your state. You can view it at this link: https://www.careeronestop.org/LocalHelp/service-locator.aspx
☑️ Volunteer in the vocational area in which you would like to obtain employment- this can provide you with recent experience that you may not otherwise have.
☑️ Attend networking events, join professional associations, and tell people you know that you are looking for work.
☑️ Consider the services of a Certified Professional Career Coach who has experience working with individuals who have gaps in employment and/or who have changed careers.

What other ideas do you have for overcoming the fear of returning to work?

You’ve heard many professionals in the career services industry talk about the importance of networking and the impact it can have on your job search. Here's how:

🗣️ Networking can provide you with access to opportunities that aren't publicly advertised.

🗣️ Being referred by a mutual connection that is viewed positively by the employer you are targeting adds a layer of credibility and trust.

🗣️ Conversations with professionals in your field can offer you insights into industry trends, company cultures, and potential job leads.

🗣️ Networking isn't just about finding a job one time—it's about building relationships that can provide support, mentorship, and opportunities throughout your career.

Networking is an investment in your future. It's about building mutually beneficial relationships that can open doors and facilitate career growth. Whether it's through professional associations, alumni events, or LinkedIn connections, every interaction has the potential to lead to new opportunities.

🎉Bonus: Beyond professional advantages, networking offers the added benefit of potentially making lifelong friends. These relationships can enrich both your personal and professional lives!

Reach out to someone in your field whom you admire. Ask for a virtual coffee chat to learn more about their career path and share your own goals. Remember, the strongest networks are built one meaningful conversation at a time!

Communication can make or break relationships and opportunities.

Clear communication fosters collaboration and builds trust. It prevents misunderstandings, solves problems, and enables people to feel valued and respected.

On the flip side, poor communication or a lack of communication can lead to confusion, missed opportunities, and conflicts. When assumptions replace conversations, conflicts arise, there is a reduction in productivity, a lack of trust that can be pervasive, and misunderstandings grow. You’ve heard the saying “You are making a mountain out of a molehill”. Without clarity, small issues can grow unchecked, leading to larger problems that could have been avoided.

How do you foster clear and effective communication in your professional life? Share your strategies and ideas!

Are you a job seeker wondering why you aren’t getting interviews? Do you have an awesome LinkedIn profile that clearly demonstrates your value, experience, and qualifications? Look at your posts and your comments on LinkedIn and Facebook. What do they say about you? Is your page public?

Lately I have seen quite a bit of negativity on Facebook and LinkedIn. Did your public online venting result in you now projecting a negative image? If you care how others perceive you (think recruiters and potential employers) this is just a reminder to look at your comments and posts. Do your public comments reflect the image you want others to have of you?
