The Gran Bosque de Agua (Great Water Forest) is an expansive ecological corridor that stretches across 250,000 hectares, shared by Mexico City, the State of Mexico, and Morelos. This region is a key provider of water for the area, with its ecosystems supporting the infiltration of water into aquifers that supply 70% of Mexico City’s water, as well as the water for Cuernavaca and Toluca. The forest’s biodiversity, including wetlands and forests, acts as a natural filtration system, ensuring that clean water flows to millions of people.
On Day 3 of our Mexico City & Surroundings Running Getaway, we will venture into the heart of this crucial landscape. As we run through its trails, we’ll take time to reflect on the profound connection between natural spaces and our water resources. This experience invites us to consider the importance of preserving such ecosystems—not just for their beauty and tranquility, but for their indispensable role in water preservation, which sustains both urban and rural communities. It’s a day to connect deeply with nature, reflect on environmental stewardship, and appreciate the silent but powerful role forests like the Gran Bosque de Agua play in our everyday lives.
