A very low impact fire shelter. 🌿Wherever you play in the outdoors it's always good to challenge yourself to minimise the impact you are having on the environment around you. This shelter used only dead wood and a minimal number of harvested leaves. The whole thing was deconstructed and scattered on departing so there was no sign of the fire or shelter remaining. It's a fun creative challenge to use minimal resources as well as meaning the area is not negatively impacted by your presence.

It's wildlife Wednesday!

How cool is this? 🦂

Did you know that scorpions glow under ultraviolet light? It makes them really easy to spot in the dark (providing you're carrying an ultraviolet torch) and surprisingly, other than knowing that it is caused by the hyaline layer in the exoskeleton, scientists still can't find an explanation for how or why scorpions do this.

Even more surprisingly, fossilised scorpions that are hundreds of millions of years old have still been known to glow under UV light!

Top tip for jungle travel:

Make sure you have a way of suspending your kit, whether it's a few extra carabiners or simply clipping dry bags onto your hammock.

I always carry a couple of bits of extra paracord to rig up a washing line next to my hammock so I can suspend everything neatly under my tarp and keep it organised and off the ground.

It means you're less likely to find creatures making homes in amongst your clothes, boots and bags, and they won't get washed away if any flooding occurs during heavy rain. It is the RAINforest afterall 🌧️

Some very interesting thoughts of where we're headed as a technologically advancing species and the importance to seek experiences that keep us connected to our more primal roots.

This would make a fantastic campfire discussion 🔥
What are your thoughts on this? Do you recognise the benefits of both sides of the coin, or do you stick to just one side?

Let us hear from you in the comments!

The golden orb weaver spider, in the Nephila genus. The webs of these beauties glimmer gold in the sunlight and are perfectly created to catch their prey. So much so, that these spiders will often keep a stockpile of food in their “larder” to see them through any harder times.

There are a lot of connotations of the jungle involving hacking and slashing at everything with machetes.

We take pride in our approach of minimal impact. It would be easy to build a shelter like this by chopping down live saplings and palms to gather the materials. But when you leave that place a day or two later, that damage remains, and takes weeks, months, even years to recover.

This shelter was built with dead, fallen branches, and thatched with leaves from a fallen banana plant. Nothing cut down, and requiring no more effort. And afterwards it was dismantled and the materials scattered naturally to leave no trace of our visit. No time needs to pass for the place to recover. It is this level of sustainability and this mindset we endeavour to impart on participants as a key component of our expeditions.

The remaining truly wild spaces are few in this world, and if we are to witness them it needs to be done so in a manner that preserves and protects them for the future.

Lately we have been thinking a LOT about how many people feel about being in "the outdoors"...

That it is something other,
Something challenging,
Maybe even something scary.

Isn't it strange how this has happened?

That we no longer feel at ease without walls around us.
That we no longer trust our instincts to keep us safe.
That we feel like we need to be trained, qualified, equipped to simply BE outdoors.

Sitting with our Bribri guide friends who call the tropical forest their home we can learn a new approach, gain a new perspective.

Shrink the fear and grow the curiosity.

If only you could smell this photo. This is the hut where chocolate is made. The cacao beans are first roasted over the fire and then ground between 2 large rocks.

The resulting crumbled mass of nibs and shells are sifted to separate them and the discarded shells become part of the flooring.

You can only imagine the smell of a house with the floor made of chocolate. That hammock is a place to experience a special kind of bliss. 😌☕🍫

There is a side of Costa Rica you just have to see to believe. Remote thick tropical forest with rivers winding a way through. Wildlife above, below and around you - monkeys, sloths, kinkajou, toucans, macaws, poison dart frogs. The forest alive with the sounds, day and night. Small villages tucked into the forests where cacao is the heart of the culture.

We have spent years living and working in the jungle here. Let us share the secrets with you.

Small groups, local guides, travel by canoe and trek into places other groups don't even know exist.

Have you heard of Dr Rachel Hopman's 20-5-3 Nature Rule?

Here it is in a nutshell:
Part 1 - Spend 20 minutes outside for three days a week - this bit of time in nature has been shown to reduce stress, lower blood pressure and improve cognitive function.

Part 2 - Each month spend a 5 hour period out in nature on a longer walk or activity - these longer excursions can improve immune function, increase creativity and give a greater sense of connection to the world around us

Part 3 - Each year spend a period of 3 days or more in a more immersive, remote natural environment. Disconnecting in this way from the modern world can offer a change in perspective and help to prioritise the important things in our lives.

There are a whole host of additional benefits that there isn't space to cover here, but why not come and fill your off-grid prescription with us. 6 nights camping in the jungle, as immersive as it gets. We sandwich this with 2 nights at an indigenous village and 2 nights in a luxury boutique beach hotel.

These vibrant Cordyline plants are often used to mark out land boundaries in Costa Rican forests.

This family of plants often have significance for indigenous groups. The Māori roast them in a hāngī to extract sugar. In Papua New Guinea they are used to mark taboo areas.
