Shirakawa
-go!

Just before I headed off on my next adventure in Miyazaki, I went to this UNESCO World Heritage site.

It is stunning! If you like beautiful one of a kind old houses, delicious and unique fresh mountain food and beautiful nature and scenery then this is the place for you!

The village is distinctive because of its gassho zukuri thatched roofs, which resemble praying hands 🙏. Traditionally, the whole village gets together to thatch a roof. It's an impressive sight! This type of house is rare and unique to Gifu's mountains, as well as being very well adapted to the seasons in this region. In the winter months, snow can pile up over a metre here.

We also went to a shrine in the village which was made famous in an anime.

After, we went to Gero onsen town, to soak in their riverside public hot spring, and look up at the stars. On the way home we stopped off in a remote mountain village and were blown away by the vibe: fireflies were glowing intermittently in front of us, frogs were constantly croaking loudly all around us, and the stars were so clear and bright. There were so many!

This is my last post for , I have totally enjoyed working with this friendly company and I am so happy to have been able to visit so many exciting places thanks to their wide knowledge of the area. Thank you to them and my friends for helping me to make these posts and enjoy living in Nagoya so much 💖

Nagoya "Meshi" (dishes): Taiwan Ramen 🌶🌶🌶

Extra Hot!!! This type of ramen was invented by a chef from Taiwan in the 70s. It was made for staff initially, but then regular customers started requesting it!

Becoming popular during the super spicy food boom of the 80’s, it was soon adopted by over half of the Chinese and ramen restaurants across Nagoya and Aichi. It is available also as pre- packed and cup noodles at supermarkets and souvenir stands.

To get the real experience, we went to the original restaurant, Misen Nagoya, which is found near Osu Shotengai!

You better believe we drank that chilli soup! And a lot of other liquids after... (good business idea right?)

Nagonoya Cafe and Guesthouse's shrine to business success

Notice the little coffee cup with Nagonoya's old name "Nishiasahi" (Western Sunrise) printed on it. Every month a shinto priest comes to the shrine to bless it's God and the business. You can see it and visit it from the café through the big glass doors at the back.

Shonai Park's Rose Garden

Since I arrived in Nagoya, there has been always some type of flower blooming here. I arrived right at the end of the cherry blossom season, just as the wisteria started blooming at Nagoya Castle. Now as the wisteria season ends, the roses have burst into full colour!

Shonai park is huge, and allows for a lot of space to relax, play in and enjoy its beautiful scenery. There were many people wandering among the roses, but we were not cramped at all by each other. A group of mothers were photographing their children with professional cameras, and there was also some newly weds having a photoshoot... they must have some lovely photographs full of memories from that day!

Shikemichi

Nearby Endoji there is a street known as Shikemichi, which grew up by the nearby Hori canal as part of a flourishing merchant's district in the 18th century.

Shikemichi means literally "Street of Four Measures". This is because the street's width was widened to a specific length of four "ke" (around 7m) to make the area safer after a particularly destructive fire in 1700. As well as the wider walkways, the area's shops and warehouses were built with fewer windows and with mud plastered walls (not just bare wood).

Shikemichi is probably the most preserved area of Nagoya, and is now known for its high-end traditional restaurants, shops and its unique rooftop shrines (see first picture) called Yanegamisama.

Shikemichi's shrines were probably built on roofs due to a lack of space for large shrines, and as spiritual safe guards against house fires and disease. They reflect the great devotion of Japanese people at the time to their gods. In this area there about 66 of these shrines, and 135 in Nagoya in total. You don't see these shrines anywhere else in Japan!

I had a great time exploring all these old buildings at dusk, and came home feeling calm and relaxed by their scenery :)

Origami!

Discover Nagoya Tours offers origami classes, and today I sat in on one of them!

We made a "tricky boat", Japanese cranes, ninja stars and a samurai helmet.

Japanese cranes make very popular origami figures as they are symbols of longevity. It is a tradition in Japan to fold a thousand small origami cranes for someone who is unwell. The monument to Sadako Sasaki (a atom bomb victim) has many thousands of cranes donated every year in her memory.

It was super fun and lovely to get know our guest! They will be back 😊

The wonderful Osu Kannon Temple and its shopping arcade.

In this temple's sprawling shotengai there are a million vintage and second-hand kimono shops, snack stalls and bars 😍I found a kimono selling for 300 yen (about £2!). We also found golden shachi (Nagoya's symbol) Coca Cola for the same price! You can take manga drawing classes here as well ;)

Osu Kannon Temple has its own sights to see such as a soybean-throwing festival and its own automata puppet show.

Visiting Endoji's Okinawan Bar!

The other night I headed out to this bar with some friends. The owners of Joegoo bar are from Okinawa, and sometimes Naoto san plays his traditional instument (pictured: first one on the left) in the street. You can try a range of special Okinawan BBQ food and alcohol here too. There is always a nice atmosphere!

Scenes from around Nagoya Castle

Admire the last of the wisteria, a pine tree and a grumpy fish!

In Japan you will often see plum, pine and bamboo trees 松竹梅(しょうちくばい)planted close together. In traditional restaurants, you will also find pine, plum and bamboo menus. This is because this is a symbolic lucky combination, with plum trees representing gracefulness, bamboo: vitality, and pine: longevity.

SCMaglev and Railway Park

The other day I took the advantage of the rainy weather and happily locked myself away in Smaglev Railway Museum for hours. I had a great time gazing at the interiors and exteriors of the trains, and finding out how Japan's railway ticks.

The 1st photo is of a Maglev train. The 2nd is a giant model railway of Nagoya. The 5th photo I have included is a shinkansen driving simulator that guests can use! The 10th photo is Japan's first bus.

Particularly interesting things for me were:

Dr Yellow, a yellow bullet train that monitors Japan's railways lines using lasers that accurately measure wear on both overhead lines and tracks at high speeds.

Train design modifications. Japan is a very mountainous country, so a key challenge to the development of high speed train travel is the air resistance and compression met in tunnels. Japan's Maglev and bullet trains' noses are especially designed to push and split air in waves out of a tunnel (see picture 1 and 4).

Earthquake prevention technology .Japan monitors signs of earthquakes closely, and have high speed response systems to stop trains in the case of one.

Cutting-edge Maglev trains (because bullet trains are so last year). Maglev is short for "magnetic levitation" .
Maglev trains use two types of magnets: one set to repel and push the train off and centre it within the guideway, and the other set to speed the floating train ahead. The lack of friction allows them to reach much higher speeds than other trains. They use the same technology as used by Tesla's Hyperloop, and allow for a safe, fast and smooth ride.
A Maglev line between Nagoya and Tokyo is expected to start operating in 2027. It will cut the bullet train travel time between the two cities in half to just 40 minutes. The line will be extended to Osaka by 2045. The maximum speed of the Maglev train will be set at 500 km per hour, however it can reach speeds of over 600 km per hour (around 375 miles per hour).

Yanagibashi Fish Market

This morning I got up at 8 to visit Yanagibashi Fish Market. By the time I got there (8.40), some stalls were already packing away, as the market opens at 4am. I saw a lot of business men selecting fish, presumably for their restaurants. Fish stalls have strong relationships with their customers which can span generations.

After viewing the incredible range of fish and shellfish, I headed out to the edge of the market to have some fresh maguro (tuna) donburi at a local restaurant.

A Noritake plate hand-painted by me :)

Today I received my fired plate in the post from Noritake! Its colours have changed from purple (see last photo) to a vibrant light pink 🌸.

Bone China is prized for its whiteness, translucency, and for the variety of coloured glazes with which it can be decorated.

Noritake Museum and Gardens

Noritake is a company which has a totally international foundation. It specialises in the production of bone china, which originates from the UK. Bone china itself is a variant of Chinese porcelain, with cow bone ash substituted for some of the kaolin (a key but historically scarce ingredient of porcelain). If that doesn't make Noritake international enough, its pottery was made in Japan primarily for an American market!

Yesterday I took the day off, and went to Noritake's Museum and Gardens. People can enter the gardens for free, so there was a lot of people studying and reading- evidently enjoying the nice weather.

First I went to Noritake's shrine. I have always been surprised by Japan's spiritual attitude towards business. The shrine is dedicated to Noritake's business success. I think this attitude also means that Japanese companies are more committed to being a force for good in society. Noritake has three main values:

Good quality
Co-prosperity
Export

When citizens noticed that Japan was importing a lot of goods after opening up (1854 onwards), and therefore losing money, Noritake was founded to "bring back money to Japan" in the Meiji era. It was therefore created quite selflessly to support Japanese people, with a mind to cater to international customers.

Noritake was the first company to successfully produce bone china in Japan. To give you an idea of its success, Noritake's tableware is currently used to serve the Japanese Imperial Family.

As you can tell, I enjoyed my visit! The last picture in this post is my own hand decorated plate 🤗 Coincidentally wisteria is a symbol of Noritake. It is also in season at the moment!

If you visit here, consider also visiting the nearby Toyota Commemorative Museum (its great!).

Endoji

Before shopping at the local supermarket, I stopped by at a local wagashi store. These are the molds for they use for making their sweets. They also sell shachi wagashi, golden tiger-fish sweets. Shachi are a symbol of Nagoya, as they are the roof ornaments of Nagoya Castle. When I stepped out of the store, the light on the street was particularly beautiful.

Endoji Shotengai (traditional covered shopping street)

I am so happy to be back living on this friendly street! On Endoji you can pop into a variety of different traditional shops selling anything from kimono to clogs, try many different types of international and local food, visit a shrine and temple, make your own traditional-style lanterns, attend a dinner hosted by geisha, and of course watch a show at the local kabuki café. This was a parade done by the kabuki actors for the last day of their show.
