In Canada I work as a dental hygienist. I'm very passionate about wildlife
preservation and conservation and was very fortunate to spend three weeks
volunteering with chimpanzees at Ngamba island off of Lake Victoria. I had
very little knowledge about chimps and I learned so much and felt I gained
much more than I gave. I brought an empty suitcase filled with donated
toothbrushes and toothpaste which I handed out to children in the community
as well as the staff members at the island. I also demonstrated
toothbrushing and flossing with a focus on preventing gum disease and tooth
decay. It felt SO good to give a little of my knowledge back to everyone
who was helping me gain an understanding about the complex and amazing
lives of the chimpanzees. I was surprised at how everyone was so receptive,
enthusiastic, and willing to learn how to improve their oral hygiene. I
didn't think it would make much of an impact but after seeing their faces,
all wide eyed and appreciative to learn something new, I was so happy to
have been a part of that! One of the staff members I keep in touch with has
told me he thinks of me every morning as he tries to brush the way I

to be meaningful but I learned that every little bit goes a long way,
