Valencia

Valencia, Spain is on my mind. It is a city that as a tour operator we truly love. As I write, the City of Arts and sciences has been turned into a point of relief dispatch. Hundreds of of volunteers have arrived and been transported to the areas affected by the “Dana” to deliver much needed supplies.
We will always love Valencia for its beauty and its determination in helping its people get through this time.
For the past 6 days I have watched the indescribable disaster these people have been hit with. The media can only cover a small part of what is happening here.
The water rose to the first floors of most buildings which means that anything on a lower level, grocery stores, pharmacies, etc have been wiped out, completely. The streets turned into rivers carrying cars, lamposts and in the aftermath, the bodies of those who could not get to higher grounds in time.
The pleas for help from those affected are heartbreaking, but in all their pain they are quick to thank the neighbors for their immeasurable help in sweeping out the knee high mud and as in so many cases, for literally reaching out and pulling them out of the water and to safety.
The blame falls on the alarms being sounded too late is what is being said.One man interviewed said that by the time the alarms went off, he was already clinging to the top of a tree praying that it wouldn’t be uprooted by the water. He broke my heart when he said “I will kiss the tree everyday and pray for its growth for having saved my life”.
There are still loved ones missing, and most have been left with only the clothes on their backs.
While there isn’t much that the US can do, we can pray that these Spaniards can rebuild their lives and that in time they can ease the pain they are living with today.
