Icy Bay may just be my favorite place anywhere. That or Skolai. Or Kinak Bay. Or maybe Arrigetch Peaks. Or .....

This post from our friends at Icy Bay Lodge perfectly sums things up.

We've flown with Hans & Tanya at Yakutat Coastal Air nearly 20 years. It was terrible news to hear of the accident.

Our heartfelt best wishes are with their families and loved ones, their crew and all the other people hurting with the news of their passing.

For all the wonderful places they've flown us to, picked us up from and helped make some amazing trips happen, thank you so much.

May you both rest peacefully.

Hugs
All of us at Expeditions Alaska.

Good times.

Sometimes ya gotta get lower and then a little bit lower again, to really get that perspective just right. And sometimes it works.

Back in the Arctic!

The Arctic National Wildlife Refuge is ALWAYS a joy.

Another nice float trip on the Marsh Fork and Canning River this year. This place is so special, and means so much to so many people. It's a treat to be able to in here like we do. And teaming with our friends at CoyoteAir is always a good time. 25 years this year I've been flying with these good people.

What exactly do you do with a Caribou rack when you find one?

You MUST pick it up and put it on your head and then put it back where you found it, of course.

We had some freezing rain, we had some snow, we had some more snow, BUT despite the wild weather we had the most important thing of all: AN AMAZING TRIP! With, eventually, a great view of Sanford, a giant dormant Volcano in the Wrangell Mountains.

Thank you , , and Allan for an incredible journey.

Glaciers frequently will damn up the flow of a river in the winter, creating a lake along its wall. In the spring, a jökulhlaup happens. (an Icelandic word, pronounced Yo-call-opp)

Glaciers frequently will damn up the flow of a river in the winter, creating a lake along its wall. In the spring, a jökulhlaup happens. A Joka-what? ! ?

It's pronounced "Yo-call-opp"! It's an Icelandic word adopted by scientists referring to when a glacially created dam breaks, sending torrents of water downhill towards wherever the heck it's going. When this happens, the water leaves impressive icebergs behind in the summer months, creating these wild free standing frozen giants.

One of my favorite treks, Adventure to Oz, heads right through the dry bed of where one of these events happened. It's an unbelievable landscape.

Alaskan mountain streams are unlike anywhere else I've been. Normally, it takes time for creeks to grow to this size and turn into waterfalls like this.

There's something remarkable in seeing high volume water come right from between a mountain's shoulders in July.

I just absolutely love walking down the side of a creek like this. The sounds, the pools, the interesting and engaging walking. Rivers and creeks in AK make off trail hiking possible. Without them, you'd be thrashing through the brush.

Alaska's water is the best. One of our favorite parts of our trips is sharing these pristine waters with our clients, which we rarely need to filter because of the abundance of rainfall, snow-melt, and how far we are from humans and beavers.

Did you now that the brown bears along the Kodiak archipelago are classified as a different sub species? (U. a. middendorffi)

The bears that we encounter in the mountains are what most Alaskans refer to as grizzlies, whereas coastal bears are often referred to as "brown bears".

Regardless, in the past 30 years of us operating we have had no incidents of brown bear or grizzly attacks.

These amazing creatures get a bad wrap because of their size, speed, and strength but overall we observe them often on trips as the creatures they are: lumbering, curious, scared of humans, opportunists, and just unbelievably amazing!

They deserve our respect, and we give it to them.
