Largest Shivalingam in the world.

The 111.2-feet Shivalingam at the Maheswaram Sri Shiva Paravathi Temple at Chenkal, near here, has entered the India Book of Records for being the tallest such structure in India.

Officials of the India Book of Records made the announcement on Thursday after measuring the height of the structure.

The imposing Shivalingam also stands a chance to find a spot in the Limca Book of Records and the Guinness World Records as adjudicators attached to these two reference books published annually, listing human and natural records, are expected to inspect and verify the height of the structure in the coming days.

Once certified, it will make it way to the record books as the largest Shivalingam in the world in terms of height and width. Currently, the record is held by the Kotilingeshwara temple in Kolar, Karnataka, which measures 108 ft (33m).

The Shivalingam situated on the premises of the Maheswaram Sri Shiva Paravathi Temple is not just a massive structure that provides visitors a great spiritual experience, but it also is an architectural marvel, noted for its daring design and exquisite carvings.

Swami Maheswarananda Saraswathi, the head of the temple who is administering the construction works, had visited all the major Shiva temples in the country before preparing a blueprint for the massive structure in 2012.

Divine atmosphere

The Shivalingam is constructed in such a way that visitors can enter a model ‘Kailasam’, the abode of Lord Shiva, which lies at the topmost floor inside the cylindrical structure. There one can view images of snow-clad Himalayas with idols of Shiva and Parvati depicting the unified form or Aikya bhavam. A rare collection of 64 forms of God Shiva can also be found inside the chamber.

On each side of the Shivalingam there are two zones where 50 people can mediate at a time by concentrating on the six chakras or energy centres in the human body. The path to the top floor exudes a calm and serene cave-like atmosphere with carvings of idols and paintings on the walls all along.

Padmanabhapuram Palace
Largest wooden Palace in Asia
Around 64 kms from Thiruvananthapuram lies the seat of the erstwhile rulers of Travancore, the Padmanabhapuram Palace. This masterpiece of indigenous Kerala architecture is located at Thuckalay, on the way to Kanyakumari. The wooden palace is well maintained and its murals, fabulous floral carvings and black granite floor continue to astound all who view it to this day. The interiors are beautiful relics with intricate rose carvings and sculptured decor. It has many murals dating back to the 17th and 18th centuries. The mahogany musical bow, windows of coloured mica, royal chairs with carvings from the Far East and the great 'Thaikkottaram', the Queen Mother’s palace with painted ceilings, all add a unique mysticism to the entire place.

The current tallest statue is the Spring Temple Buddha located in the Zhaocun township of Lushan County, Henan, China. It is a statue depicting Vairocana Buddha and was built in 2002. It is 153 m (503 ft), which includes a 20 m (66 ft) lotus throne placed on a 25 m (82 ft) pedestal/building.

The biggest water village in the world.
Technically part of the Bruneian capital of Bandar Seri Begawan, Kampong Ayer has more than enough uniqueness and history about it to be considered separately. Meaning “water village”, Kampong Ayer is built on stilts above the Brunei river. More than 30,000 people inhabit Kampong Ayer, the largest water settlement in Southeast Asia, and travel about by boat or the extensive network of wooden walkways, footbridges, and boardwalks. Kampong Ayer’s 4,200 structures include homes, mosques, restaurants, shops, schools, and a even a hospital. People have been living here for more than 1,300 year. Many of the traditional lifestyles of its inhabitants; fishermen, traders, and artisans; have remained unchanged. Visitors can experience this heritage by taking one of the many water taxis in front of the Yayasan Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah in Bandar Seri Begawan.

Largest bird sculpture in the world.
For those with a penchant for Indian mythology, here’s a destination to aim for. Kerala is set to open the Jatayu Nature Park. A rock-themed park located at Chatataya-mangalam in Kollam district, where the mythical Jatayu is said to have fallen from the sky. Atop a hill—200 feet long, 150 feet wide and 70 feet high—the resident Jatayu in concrete is the world’s largest bird sculpture. Inside it lies a digital museum, a 6D theatre and other technological wonders. The first phase of the park will also have an adventure zone with more than 20 games on offer. Contained within the Maharaja's City Palace are the two largest single items of sterling silver, two huge water vessels. Each of the silver urns has a capacity of 4,000L and were filled with water from the holy Ganges River for the personal use of the maharaja during visits outside of India. Each of the silver water vessels weighs 345 kg and stand at 1.6 metres are recognised by the Guinness Book of World Records as the largest single object constructed from silver.
They were created over a two year period between 1894 and 1896 by two Jaipur silversmiths and were fashioned from a total of 14,000 silver coins. The pair of silver water jars avoided the use of soldering sections together, so they are considered as a solid single piece of silver.
