Happy Earth Science Week!

Each year, millions of visitors come to Rocky to experience its scenic mountainous landscapes, abundant wildlife, and high elevation alpine tundra. Glaciers, perennial snowfields, and ice patches are an important part of these human experiences.

Glaciers shaped this landscape, carving the dramatic alpine cirques and aretes and filling valley floors with glacial deposits. Today, meltwater from snow and perennial ice fields/glaciers supports the park’s plants and wildlife.

This explore the research and monitoring of glaciers, perennial snowfields, and snowpack of the Rocky Mountains: https://www.nps.gov/articles/glaciers-and-perennial-snowfields-research-in-rocky-mountain-national-park.htm

Elk are beginning to gather for fall mating season. This time is also known as the elk rut!

Bull elk can be very aggressive as they protect the cows and young in their herd. When your friends ask, “how close can I get to that elk?" suggest they ask a different question, such as “how far should I stay back?”

Let wildlife be wild and observe from a distance. Stay back at least 75 feet (or two bus lengths). Let your friends know that approaching wildlife is illegal in Rocky Mountain National Park and it doesn’t matter if they are doing it to take a photograph.

Meadow closures are in place between the hours of 5 p.m. to 10 a.m. Areas that are closed include meadow areas in Horseshoe Park, Upper Beaver Meadows, Moraine Park, Harbison Meadow, and Holzwarth Meadow. During the specified hours, these areas are closed to all travel on foot or via horseback off established roadways and established trails.

Fishing locations along the Fall River, Thompson River, and Colorado River that are accessed by walking through closed areas are closed to fishing between the hours of 5 p.m. and 7 a.m. These closures remain in place through October 31.
