Amazing story.

Biddy Bridget Mason (1815-1891)

She was born into slavery and "given" as a wedding gift to a Mormon couple in Mississippi named Robert and Rebecca Smith. In 1847 at age 32, Biddy Mason was forced to walk from Mississippi to Utah tending to the cattle behind her master’s 300-wagon caravan. She "walked" from Mississippi to Utah. That's 1, 618.9 miles!

After four years in Salt Lake City, Smith took the group to a new Mormon settlement in San Bernardino, California in search of gold. Biddy Mason soon discovered that the California State Constitution made slavery illegal, and that her master's had a plan to move them all to Texas to avoid freeing them.

With the help of some freed Blacks she had befriended, she and the other Slaves attempted to run away to Los Angeles, but they were intercepted by Smith and brought back. However, when he tried to leave the state with his family and Slaves, a local posse prevented them from leaving.

Biddy had Robert Smith brought into court on a writ of habeas corpus. She, her daughters, and the ten other Slaves were held in jail for their own safety to protect them from an angry and violent pro-slavery mob until the Judge heard the case and granted their freedom.

Now free, Mason and her three daughters moved to Los Angeles where they worked and saved enough money to buy a house at 331 Spring Street in downtown Los Angeles. Biddy was employed as a Nurse, Midwife, and Domestic Servant. She was one of the first Black women to own land in the city of Los Angeles.

She had the intelligence and boldness to use part of her land as a temporary resting place for horses and carriages, and people visiting town paid money in exchange for the space. That particular area was considered the first "parking lot" in Los Angeles.

Knowing what it meant to be oppressed and friendless, Biddy Mason immediately began a philanthropic career by opening her home to the poor, hungry, and homeless. Through hard work, saving, and investing carefully, she was able to purchase large amounts of real estate including a commercial building, which provided her with enough income to help build schools, hospitals, and churches.

Her financial fortunes continued to increase until she accumulated a fortune of almost $300,000. In today's money, that would be $6M. Her most noted accomplishment is the founding of the First AME Church in California. In her tireless work she was known for saying "If you hold your hand closed, nothing good can come in. The open hand gives in abundance; even as it receives."

Biddy Bridget Mason died on January 15, 1891 at the age of 76. On March 27, 1988, ninety one years after her death, a special occasion event was given in her honor by members of the church she helped founded. Mayor Tom Bradley was among the dignitaries in attendance. Black women are legendary.

"Here lies George Johnson, hanged by mistake in 1882. He was right, we was wrong, but we strung him up, and now he's gone."

At least they owned up to it!

This historic off of I-19 in Green Valley is sponsoring a tribute concert this Saturday. By the band "Strait Country." They've played in Tombstone before. We've heard them at Four Deuces & gave a terrific show. It's also a benefit for the ranch. Check it out, may be worth your time & interest.

Historic Canoa Ranch is listed in the National Register of Historic Places. We offer tours of the ranch on Tuesdays and Saturdays.

Camillus Fly took amazing photos that give us a wonderful look at 1880s Western history. He documented lots of interactions with the Chiricahua Apaches. Tomorrow is the anniversary of the day that Geronimo surrendered to the U.S. military. I happened in the Southeastern corner of Arizona.

Camillus Fly, often called C.S. Fly - documented old west history with his photographs.

Some say this will be in competition to the town of Tombstone Arizona. This is where the was filmed. Do you think this will be a problem for Tombstone, the old West town, or not??

A part of Southern Arizona’s rich film history is being preserved. Mescal Movie Set, which is located between Vail and Benson, was recently saved from demolition.

In May of 1861, 9 year old John Lincoln “Johnny” Clem ran away from his home in Newark, Ohio, to join the Union Army, but found the Army was not interested in signing on a 9 year old boy when the commander of the 3rd Ohio Regiment told him he “wasn’t enlisting infants,” and turned him down. Clem tried the 22nd Michigan Regiment next, and its commander told him the same. Determined, Clem tagged after the regiment, acted out the role of a drummer boy, and was allowed to remain. Though still not regularly enrolled, he performed camp duties and received a soldier’s pay of $13 a month, a sum collected and donated by the regiment’s officers.
The next April, at Shiloh, Clem’s drum was smashed by an artillery round and he became a minor news item as “Johnny Shiloh, The Smallest Drummer”. A year later, at the Battle Of Chickamauga, he rode an artillery caisson to the front and wielded a musket trimmed to his size. In one of the Union retreats a Confederate officer ran after the cannon Clem rode with, and yelled, “Surrender you damned little Yankee!” Johnny shot him dead. This pluck won for Clem national attention and the name “Drummer Boy of Chickamauga.”
Clem stayed with the Army through the war, served as a courier, and was wounded twice. Between Shiloh and Chickamauga he was regularly enrolled in the service, began receiving his own pay, and was soon-after promoted to the rank of Sergeant. He was only 12 years old. After the Civil War he tried to enter West Point but was turned down because of his slim education. A personal appeal to President Ulysses S. Grant, his commanding general at Shiloh, won him a 2nd Lieutenant’s appointment in the Regular Army on 18 December 1871, and in 1903 he attained the rank of Colonel and served as Assistant Quartermaster General. He retired from the Army as a Major General in 1916, having served an astounding 55 years.
General Clem died in San Antonio, Texas on 13 May 1937, exactly 3 months shy of his 86th birthday, and is buried at Arlington National Cemetery.

**UPDATE!**Wow what an amazing and overwhelming response we got! Guess it’s needed more than what we thought.

We are only going to be able to take the first 10 that messaged us first. We want to keep the numbers low so we can spend quality time with each rider.

If this goes well and everyone feels that it has helped we will continue to do these practice days.

As of right now we are full but message us if you want to be put on the list if we should have another.

Hey Shoot Out Arena Bull Riders!

Robby and I have been talking and we have seen so many people wanting to ride bulls but don’t know how to get into it or don’t have much guidance.

We would love to help anyone that is willing to put in the work to improve their bull riding skills by having a practice. We are going to bring in some good practice stock and help whoever wants help.

We are going to do this Saturday August 14th starting at 9am. We will charge $50 a person and will pay for stock and provide lunch. Please PM us if you want to come so we make sure we have enough practice stock.

The San Pedro is running:

The River

The San Pedro River is far from maximum flood levels, but it is running high. We showed you a picture of water near the Hereford Road bridge today. Here is another showing the water as seen from the bridge.

The river is dark with dirt. The dirt, washed down arroyos from the hills flanking the river, will be deposited in places, replenishing nutrients in the riparian zone along the river. The force of the water will carve the bank of the river in places creating new channels, perhaps forming a new oxbow. Logjams will be cleared, new piles of debris with form, trees will be uprooted. It is part of the eternal cycle of change in the riparian area.

Where obstructions slow the water, it will soak into the aquifer. The remaining surface flow will continue downstream. The cottonwoods, willows and other vegetation along the river will slow the water. Dead vegetative matter along the river forms a kind of sponge that holds water, again slowing it so it sinks into the soil rather than running downstream, also retarding erosion. This is the importance of the riparian forest that has grown during the time the SPRNCA has been protected. Without it, the river is basically a drainage ditch that reduces recharge of the aquifer, fails to replenish nutirents, and is not good habitat for plants and animals.

That is a lot of rumination for one picture of a fast-moving river. It can also just be enjoyed as a place and event of great beauty.

As soon as the automobile was invented, families began taking road trips. Tombstone Arizona was soon an included destination. After WWI ended, Broadway of America - Historic Hwy. 80 - was a route that brought even more people to town. Our TombstoneTravelTips website has a history page that tells how this happened.
