【Japanese Tombo-Dama making experience】

"Tombo-dama" (とんぼ玉) refers to traditional Japanese glass beads that are often characterized by their intricate and colorful designs🎨 The term "tombo" means dragonfly, and the beads are named after the dragonfly due to their round shape and vibrant colors, resembling the insect🦋

These glass beads have a long history in Japanese culture and craftsmanship. They are made using a technique known as lampworking or wound glass bead making🔥 This process involves melting glass rods over a flame and shaping the molten glass around a metal rod.
The beads are then decorated with various patterns and colors, creating unique and artistic designs✨

It's worth noting that there are different styles and regional variations of tombo-dama beads, each reflecting the artistic traditions of the craftsmen who create them🌐🎌

Kobe's Shin-Kaichi, once called as the "Asakusa of the East," used to be a top-notch entertainment hub in Japan😳

It attracted not just locals but also many tourists visit here to experience rakugo (traditional comic storytelling) and other traditional performances.

Here's a fun fact: Charlie Chaplin himself made a few visits to Shin-Kaichi before World War II, as reported in the newspapers, casually strolling around the area🎩!

Kannouji, written as "神呪寺," might sound surprising at first, as it combines the characters for "curse" and "deity."😱 However, there's a meaningful interpretation behind it! The term "curse" here refers to a spell or incantation, portraying the temple as a place with a mysterious and potent force akin to that of a deity, emphasizing the divine nature of its incantations. Despite the initial surprise, the name carries a significant and fitting meaning👏

Interestingly, Kannouji is also a lesser-known spot for night views and offers a great vantage point for enjoying the Yodogawa Fireworks, a summer event in Osaka😳🎆

【Japanese Soy Sauce】

In the current soy sauce brewing in Japan, 99% is done in tanks made of materials such as stainless steel or plastic, and less than 1% is done using wooden barrels.
Before World War II, brewing containers were exclusively wooden barrels, and there was a significant amount of reuse of barrels previously used in the sake industry. Sake breweries would replace wooden barrels every 20 years, and the old barrels were often reused for brewing soy sauce and miso.

Unlike sake, soy sauce and miso use salt, which led to fewer clogs and leaks, making reuse advantageous. After the war, as the sake industry transitioned from wooden barrels to stainless steel or enamel tanks for hygiene and taste considerations, soy sauce breweries followed a similar path. During these changes, Adachi Brewery remains dedicated to the exclusive use of wooden barrels in their brewing process✨

[ Experience Japanese Calligraphy ]

Japanese calligraphy, called “shodo,” is the art of writing with a brush and ink. It involves creating beautiful characters using specific strokes and techniques✨

They use brushes and ink on special paper, and the focus is not just on writing but expressing feelings and artistic style through each stroke.

In Japan, we learn it from calligraphy class at school since we are kids! Practicing calligraphy also allows you to enhance concentration😌

This is a picture of experiencing copying sutra. It is an ancient Buddhist practice that involves hand-transcribing sacred texts using a brush, ink, and sutra paper, fostering mindfulness and inner peace.

It is especially practiced by both monks. Here in Mt.Shosha, you can experience this copying sutra in a peaceful place surrounded by nature🍃

Sukiyaki🥩🍲

Sukiyaki is a popular Japanese hot pot dish known for its rich and savory flavor. It’s a warming and comforting dish, particularly popular during the colder seasons in Japan🍲

The main ingredients typically include thinly sliced beef, tofu, various vegetables like mushrooms and leeks. Then we add udon noodle at the end!🤤

These ingredients are cooked in a shallow pot at the dining table, and a sweet and savory soy-based broth, often with sugar and mirin, is used for simmering.

We dip the cooked ingredients into a raw beaten egg before eating. Sukiyaki is not only a delicious meal but also a social dining experience, as it is often enjoyed with family or friends gathered around the table✨

Himeji Castle is one of the best-preserved castles from the Sengoku Period that has survived into modern times. In 1993, it was designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
It is also known as Shirasagi-jō due to its characteristic color, reminiscent of a white heron. 🪽

Himeji Castle, also known as Shirasagi-jō ("White Heron Castle"), is one of the most beautifully preserved castles in Japan.

It was first built in 1300 by Norinura Akamatsu, but its most famous inhabitant was Hideyoshi Toyotomi.

You can walk inside the castle as it was in the past and also visit the nearby garden with an all-inclusive ticket that you can buy from automatic machines at the entrance.

At night, the castle is beautifully illuminated, giving Himeji an ancient and romantic atmosphere.

Did you know that in 1995, there was a big earthquake in Kobe that destroyed a significant part of the city?

It seems impossible now because Kobe looks beautiful and perfect (last photo).

However you can see that in the memorial area, they preserved the old port as it was after the earthquake.

The people of Kobe moved on from that day, but they will never forget what happened and what they lost.
If you have the chance, go and visit this moving memorial.
