Birding With Me - Birdwatching Tours Join us for world-class birding in Uruguay, the secret birding hotspot of the Southern Cone! About a hundred species can be seen on a single day!

Uruguay brings several important features that makes birdswatching activity very enjoyable and productive. In a small area, many different environments are involved; that is why the diversity of birds is so great! The territory of Uruguay is 48 times smaller than Brazil but contains 25% of its bird species, and is 15 times smaller than Argentina but 50% of its species are represented in this small

country, as well. Moreover, the coastline and wetlands here are very important for migrant species that arrive every year, during Summer and Winter, from the North and South of the continent. If you are interested in South American bird species, consider visiting Uruguay!

Once again we are fascinated to take the Wine & Birds tour in Uruguay. Thanks to Alvaro's Adventures for this beautiful group of 8 birders who will be touring the country for 15 days, tasting wines from more than 8 national wineries. Among the wineries of the West, as always the Falcone Family makes us feel among friends with their warm welcome at the Falcone Winery, which since the 19th century has been an important part of the country's viticulture with its high quality wines, recognized and awarded nationally and internationally.
The experience could not be the same without our great team, our bird guide Rafa and our driver Omar.💪💪💪🪶🦉🦅🦩🦜🦉

We had a great full day birding in Punta del Este and nearby areas. We visited 4 IBAs along the Ocean coasts including marshes, estuaries, coastal lagoons and beaches. Among the approximately 100 species recorded yesterday, this was the STAR! The Pinnated Bittern (Botaurus pinnatus pinnatus) is a rare bird to see throughout its range. This secretive bird remains hidden in dense wetland vegetation and is usually very silent. However, we were lucky enough to see this individual completely in the open, a few meters from our position, at midday and in a very docile and relaxed temperament.

Almost a month has passed since this magnificent Wines & Birds tour in Uruguay with our guests from Alvaro's Adventures ended. In 15 days, a variety of wineries were visited, from the oldest in the country with a family history of generations, such as Bodega Falcone, with internationally awarded wines, to the most modern and impressive for its technology and vanguard architecture, such as Bodega Garzón, which is positioned among the best ones in the whole world. After visiting the most notable national parks, protected areas and IBAs on a trip that covered all regions of the country, more than 270 species of birds were seen, 50% of all the species recorded to date for this small territory that has a magnificent diversity of environments.

These are delightful photographs taken by our bird guide .ph Mauricio Silvera yesterday during a day trip with birdwatchers who visited Montevideo on a cruise ship. By far, among the approximately 80 species seen, this species was the most appreciated. Although relatively widely distributed in South America, the Bearded Tachuri Polystictus pectoralis is a small tyrant that goes unnoticed due to its behavior. It lives in tall grasslands where it generally remains hidden. It is possible to see it when it poses on fences to sing or when it performs its aerial display. In Uruguay, it occurs during the spring and summer months, when it can nest from November to January. The individual in the photo was in a pair and possibly had chicks, since it was seen carrying food in its bill. It was found in an area of fairly well preserved grasslands and it was possible to watch it with a rational use of playback. Three small groups, each with their guide, met together at the site to call it just once and they succeeded! Thanks to our guide Rafa Tosi for the great idea!

It was a great day of birding in the West of Montevideo, the capital city of Uruguay. Three guides worked in parallel with three small groups of birders who arrived on cruise ships. It was very fun to be on the trip and join forces to observe some of the stars of this tour such as Dark-throated Seedeater and Bearded Tachuri. In a few hours the list reached 80 species!

Many unforgettable memories will remain from this fascinating 15-day trip to Uruguay. With great joy we culminated in the eastern wetlands with nearly 250 species observed of the 500 recorded in the country. Special thanks to Steve Hunter for sharing with us his amazing photos of the birds and other wildlife during this trip.

Until next time!

It turned out to be a very productive morning in the Quebrada de los Cuervos National Park and surrounding areas, added to the surprise of finding a litter of "Charabones", a local term given to Greater Rhea chicks. It happens from time to time that the offspring become "guachos" (without a father) and go to rural establishments where they find food and manage to reach maturity without losing their wild character. There was also time to learn about the local culture and enjoy good company. A beautiful storm arrived in the afternoon and it was great for a break in front of the fire and learning about "MATE", a traditional Uruguayan infusion. After learning with our guide Rafa Tosi how to prepare it, a tasting round began. Special thanks to Steve Hunter for the photos of Diadimed Tanger (Stephanophorus diadematus), Blue-billed Black-Tyrant (Knipolegus cyanirostris), Red-winged Tinamou (Rhynchotus rufescens) and Southern Screamer (Chauna torquata).

This is a great photo of a couple of Straight-billed Reed haunter, took by Steve Hunter, one of our guests during the Major Birding Tour around Uruguay. This bird was one of the targets of this 15-day tour. It is an endemic species present in humid environments where plants of the Eryngium genus dominate. Usually reclusive in behavior, it is possible to see it when it exposes itself high in the vegetation to sing. As is to be expected from the species of the Furnariidae family to which it belongs, its general coloration is chestnut brown, but it stands out for its long straight bill, whitish supercilia, rufous shoulders and long, spiny tail.

What an incredible birding today! White-naped Xenopsaris (Xenopsaris albinucha) and Pale-breasted Spinetail (Synallaxis albescens) the stars of the day. They weren't even on our field check list, but no bird can escape from our guide Rafa!

A 15-day tour around Uruguay has just started with a wonderful group from Golden Gate Bird Alliance!
We already got some of the first target birds to the west of the country. White-fronted Woodpecker and Little Thornbird, both species with a restricted range of distribution, specially associated with the Espinal biome.

Imagine flashes of yellow catching your eye as you scan the expanse of rolling hills in the landscape of rural Uruguay. You’re greeted by the flashy Campo Flicker, a common woodpecker species found across open and semi-open habitat of eastern and central South America. In Uruguay you will easily see this dashing bird, perched on fence posts and foraging for insects across the dusty ground of the countryside of the interior of the country.

True to its name (“campo" means field or agrarian countryside) the Campo Flicker coexists with farmers and ranchers across Uruguay, residing year-round and providing visual and auditory (and some insect abatement) services to their human neighbors.

We would love to introduce you to this bird and landscape! Contact us to learn more about our birding tour offerings across Uruguay. 📷 Bill Pohley

What does the elegant Red-legged Seriema and fine Uruguayan wine have in common? Both can be found on a customized birding tour with Birding With Me!

Uruguay’s northern region of Rivera near the border with Brazil hosts expansive open landscapes of wineries and charismatic birds. One such winery, Bodega Cerro Chapeu, has garnered international recognition for its adapted varieties such as Tannat, Cabernet Sauvignon, Arinarnoa, Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. The winery uses a selection of autochthonous yeasts from its growing region, and applies minimal intervention vinification techniques in the production of their wine, giving it a unique flavor.

Bodega Cerro Chapeu winery features the local Red-legged seriema on one of its labels, and when birding near the vineyard, it’s possible to see one of these nearly 1 meter (3 foot) tall birds walking confidently among the vines. This is exactly what recent clients enjoyed when visiting the vineyards of Cerro Chapeu. These birds are frequent visitors of the winery, finding it a hospitable environment for foraging. They are also heard at dawn singing in duets, their vocalization heard across the landscape.

Did you know Birding with me offers birding day trips to visiting cruise ship passengers? Plan your Montevideo port stop for a productive day of birding with us!

We’ll take you to the Important Bird Area (IBA) of Playa Penino and the Santa Lucía wetlands, west of Montevideo, a mere 30 minutes drive from the Port. Santa Lucía wetlands is a large protected area along one of the most important rivers in Uruguay, the Santa Lucía River, which is the source of water for the city of Montevideo.

These two locations comprise habitat for one-fifth of the bird species found in Uruguay: In just six to eight hours it’s possible to count close to 100 bird species!

Playa Penino in particular is an important stop for migratory species. Birds come from the south of the continent during the Austral winter and another group arrives from the north of the continent during the summer. It is a good place for plovers and terns, such as the Snowy-crowned Tern, a bird with a restricted range which is present here in good numbers. Other exciting birds are the Olrog's Gull (an endemic species), the Rusty-collared seedeater and the Whistling heron.
