Malana is considered to be one of the oldest democracies in the world with its own set of rules and a legal system.
Contrary to what the locals including Malanis themselves believe that they are Greeks (descendents of Greek soldiers of king Alexander’s army) historians trace back the village history to the arrival of Jamlu rishi (sage) to the village who made it his home and framed all the rules and customs. The village is governed democratically by a council with 11 members, who are considered to be the delega
tes of Jamlu rishi. All decisions are taken in the name of Jamlu rishi, whose will is communicated by a Gur (the village priest).
