1️⃣ Bring your own snorkeling equipment 🐢
It is well known that you can dive with turtles on the Gili Islands. If you still have space in your luggage, it’s the cheapest to organize your snorkeling equipment in advance so that you don’t have to rely on the prices of the few local providers or constantly have to resort to rental equipment 🤿
2️⃣ Plan your cash in advance 💰
There are only a few machines on Gili Air and they are only refilled at certain times. It can happen that once the ATMs are empty, you won’t be able to get any cash for a whole day. So always plan in advance, especially since a lot things on the island still have to be paid in cash 💸
3️⃣ You don’t need to book any tours to snorkel with turtles 🐢
The chances of encountering turtles are very high! With a little patience you can spot them during high tide in the eastern part of the island 🤿
4️⃣ Avoid booking small horse drawn carriages 🐴
They are everywhere on the island as Gili Air is so small that you don’t need scooters to explore everything. Therefore, many locals offer small horse drawn carriages to take tourists from one place to the other. These are not only more expensive than exploring the island on foot or by bike, but they are also unpleasant for the animals, who have to be in harness all day in temperatures of over 30 degrees without water or rest 🚲
5️⃣ Before booking, check where your accommodation is located 🏠
If you book your accommodation near the mosque, you will be woken up every morning at 4AM with the call to prayer, which lasts 20 minutes. So if you would rather sleep longer, it would be better to avoid this area 💤
