I love the new UEFA Champions League. The era of meaning Mickey Mouse teams in the group stage are sailing through is long gone. In the new format a team will meet at least 4 to 5 big teams before proceeding to the knockout stage
I know you are confused how the new format works, let me assist you to understand.
The breakdown of the new UCL format:
• 36 teams, all in one group
• Each team plays 8 games, 4 home and 4 away, as shown in the fixtures below
• The group standing will be done by points and goal difference just like any other league
• The top 8 teams after group stages will be qualified for Round of 16 directly (meaning these 8 teams would play only 2 extra games than previous seasons)
• The teams on position 9-16 will face teams on position 17-24 after drawing to play a regular two-legged knockout/playoff fixture
• 8 winners of those fixtures will be qualified for Round of 16, 8 losers will qualify for UEFA Europa League
• The teams on position 25-36 after Group Stages would automatically get eliminated
• Away goals.
• No home and away fixtures
I think we will watch more and exciting football in the course of the season.
Teams participating in Europe will need to have large and strong squads to play both in Europe and domestic leagues…
