As many of you know, I have taken a brief hiatus as a travel agent over the last year or so to pursue some other career goals. When your train gets canceled due to a national strike in France, you roll with it and rent a car to get where you are going. Sometimes travel doesn’t always go to plan, and it’s important to remain flexible.

Today I visited Doi Inthanon National Park, the highest point in Thailand. We trekked through terraced rice fields and lush jungle to a beautiful waterfall with a local Karen hill tribe guide. He spotted a venomous green tree viper and kindly snapped some closeup pictures for me. We then visited two stunning pagodas dedicated to the Thai King and Queen perched atop the mountain with immaculately well maintained gardens. This is a highly recommended day trip from Chiang Mai.

The third and final of the colorful sights in Chiang Rai was The Black House. This one is less a Buddhist temple and more an avant Garde art installation.

Today was a 3 hour drive from Chiang Mai through the mountains to the city of Chiang Rai to see three very special temples. The first was Wat Rong Khun, more commonly known as The White Temple. It is magnificent and surely worth the drive.

Today I took a cruise through beautiful Phang Nga Bay in the Andaman Sea to explore its many breathtaking islands including the famous James Bond Island—a filming location for the 1974 James Bond classic, The Man With the Golden Gun. This is a great way to spend the day out on the water away from the hustle of Phuket.

Sometimes when traveling for awhile, you need a few days of rest and relaxation to rejuvenate you. The charming, laid-back island of Koh Lanta in Southern Thailand has provided exactly that. I’ve been staying in a traditional open air stick house built over the sea situated in a sleepy fishing village. It’s absolute paradise and I’ve spent the day just soaking it all up.

Today I visited the sacred Kulen Mountain outside Siem Reap, Cambodia. This special place is where the ancient Khmer civilization began. It has remnants of Hindu spirituality carved into a spring fed creek bed, as well as a beautiful Buddhist temple of significance. Finally we made a stop at a jungle waterfall for a swim. The mountain is definitely worth a visit on any trip to Siem Reap.
