Smile and See Update part 3 of 3.

New components of the Smile and See initiative!

Setting up sewing groups
This year, our Smile and See added a sewing component thanks to a partnership with Julie Phippen from Sewpportive Friends. We set up four workshops each with 10 community members from 4 different villages. They were taught how to make reusable sanitary pads on manual sewing machines and were inspired and supported to set up their own sewing cooperatives. We will be keeping in touch to help them with equipment, supplies and more workshops in the coming months so that they can keep learning, making pads and developing their skills!

Polio vaccinations
This year, we tagged on a polio vaccination station to our Smile and See Safari. Two nurses joined us for 4 days and vaccinated 143 children against polio - an important effort to better protect children in the area and make the most of our set-up for improved access to healthcare.

We want to thank all the partners involved in making this happen including , D3 Foundation, Ministry of Health and Child Care as well as our generous donors!

Most importantly thanks to the team behind the scenes.
From the cleaners scrubbing and sterilising the equipment, to the community cooks preparing patient lunches, to the drivers lugging our tonnes of materials around, to our volunteer Cobras Community Wildlife Protection scouts setting-up tents and managing crowds, to the wildlife guides who take care of our overseas volunteers... this huge logistical operation couldn’t happen without a big coordinated team behind the scenes, working long days to help ensure we can treat as many patients as possible. In the words of Mark Butcher “amhlope” to all!

Eye care patients
3224 patients were seen by our team of eye doctors and optometrists and over 2000 glasses benefitted patients needing reading or prescription glasses. A number of patients with cataracts and glycoma were also identified. Patients with dry eyes or other problems were provided with an examination and basic medication, including eye drops. Over 2,500 pairs of sunglasses were distributed!

Highlights of this year’s Smile and See with .

The work that Imvelo Safari Lodges to make Smile and See happen is so incredible that we can’t sum it up in one post. So here’s a series of photos to show what they have been up to in the past few weeks. Part 1 of 3.

Dental care patients
Over the course of our 6 mobile clinics, treatments included 3174 extractions, 164 fillings, 11 root canal treatments, and 1750 fluoride applications....! The team worked hard to avoid the 3850 patients waiting for too long. All patients were fed to limit “light-headedness” that can often happen during such treatments. Over 5000 toothbrushes were distributed and school children were taught about oral hygiene.

🎄✨ Spreading Holiday Cheer with Sustainability! ✨🌿
Last week, the team celebrated the season with a meaningful activity in the beautiful, remote region of Caño Negro. Together with our friends at Tocu Tent Camp, we took part in a tree-planting project, helping to restore the local ecosystem and support endangered species. 🌱💚

🌳 We planted native trees like the Mountain Almond (Dipteryx panamensis) and Cedro Dulce (Cedrela tonduzii), both vital to Costa Rica’s lowlands. The Mountain Almond, in particular, provides essential food and shelter for the endangered Great Green Macaw! 🦜 Each tree planted offsets around 25 kg of CO2 annually, making every step we take count for the planet. 🌍✨

Let’s keep working toward a greener future, together. 🌿💪

In 2020, Musekese Conservation expanded its impact with the addition of a dedicated research arm—and today, their work goes far beyond the field. Guests of Classic Zambia have the unique opportunity to engage directly with our passionate research team.

Through engaging presentations and hands-on demonstrations, visitors learn about the critical conservation tools and techniques used to protect wildlife, including the devastating impact of snares, how camera traps monitor elusive species, and more. This invaluable work is made possible, in large part, thanks to the support from our tourism operations.

Every stay at not only connects you with nature—it helps protect it.

At we are happy to take you to see the ‘real life’ Paddington Bear in a very special place in Ecuador - the Maquipucuna Reserve! 🌿🇪🇨

Spanning over 14,000 acres, Maquipucuna is within the Andean Chocó bioregion and is one of the top 5 biodiversity hotspots in the world, being home to a multitude of species living within multiple ecozones, including the endangered Andean (spectacled) bear that inspired the creation of Paddington.

Andean bears spend time in Maquipucuna feasting on wild avocados and enjoying the beautiful habitat. They are easily seen multiple seasons of the year when trees are in fruit-bearing season, they can be up to 2m tall and weigh up to 130kg, plus they are the only bears endemic to South America. They are found in a range of habitats throughout much of the Andes and the surrounding mountain ranges. They are magical to observe!

Maquipucuna, just two hours from Quito, allows visitors to walk more than 40km of trails through pristine forest (including guided night walks!), take a dip in one of the many holes or waterfalls, learn about the diverse ecosystem of the Chocó-Andino, including the more than 400 bird species found there and of course observe Andean bears.

In addition to exploring and enjoying the prolific nature, guests can enjoy fresh, shade grown coffee cultivated in the reserve and dine on delectable locally sourced cuisine.

Join us as we visit the home of the largest congregation of Andean bears and immerse yourself in Ecuador’s wonderful wilderness at Maquipucuna ‘a la Tropic’! 🐻✨

Guide Andrea Hinojos and her group at Camp Cecil de la Isla had an amazing encounter with the rarely-seen oarfish this week! Oarfish typically dwell in the deep ocean so it is unual to find them in the waters around Camp Cecil on Isla Espiritu Santo. Check out the distinctive dorsal fin with red accents that runs the entire length of the body, giving them a snake-like appearance.

Updates from

Last week, Ngamo Primary School celebrated the farewell of their Grade 7 class, and our head guide, Vusa, took the initiative to take them on a game drive. As part of our ongoing commitment to community engagement, we combined the outing with a tour of Camelthorn Lodge and a career guidance session. We introduced the students to various roles within our organization—such as guiding, management, and other key departments and shared valuable insights into the educational paths and skills required for each. He had amazing feedback for us after their excursion.

“The students were highly engaged and asked many questions. It was heartening to see their enthusiasm and curiosity about the possibilities that exist within the wildlife and tourism sector. I believe that experiences like these can have a significant impact on the students’ future and career choices and help them understand the importance of conservation and community involvement.”

Vusa believes very strongly in this kind of involvement and has proposed making career guidance an integral part of our educational outreach program. Regularly engaging with local schools and offering career guidance sessions can be a great tool to help us inspire the next generation to consider careers in wildlife conservation and tourism. This will not only help us attract talented and passionate individuals to our organisation but also contribute to the overall development of the local communities.

Happy Independence Day, Zambia! 🇿🇲

Today marks a momentous occasion—Zambia’s 60th anniversary of independence! Did you know that Kafue National Park, home to our Musekese and Ntemwa-Busanga Camps, is even older than the country itself? With its rich, sometimes challenging history, the Kafue remains one of Africa’s last great true wildernesses.

Here’s to Zambia standing tall and thriving for many more decades! We are proud to continue our work in preserving this incredible wilderness—a place our founders have cherished since childhood. Let’s check back in another 60 years and see how far we’ve come…

is more than meets the palate!

Incredible wine, check ✅. Top notch culinary experience, check ✅. Luxurious accommodation at La Casona, check ✅. Superb service and hospitality, ✅check!

But this winery has much more to offer than what’s mentioned above! Their biodynamic practices in winemaking can be regarded as the gold standard in sustainability. Their efforts in sustainable wine making not just in their processes of making wine but also in the way that they take care of the land. On top of that, the excursions that they offer from hiking, biking and visits to the Rio Maipo Wetlands with amazing guides make this place incredibly special!

Thank you Matetic Vineyards for hosting us. Stay tuned for some bird photos at the Rio Maipo Wetlands.

PS - their Syrah out of this world! 😍😍😍🍷🍷
