We will be visiting several places on this list including dinner reservations at the Christmas Wonder World at St. Peters Stiftskulinarium, a nearly 1,200 year old restaurant built into the cliffside! We visited St. Peters in September and the food and atmosphere were superb.

Christmas trees…a gift from the Germanic region to the rest of Europe and America. The tradition of decorating with greenery in the winter traces it’s roots to many cultures including the Egyptians, Romans and northern European tribes. To decorate their homes, the Egyptians used reeds and papyrus, the Romans evergreen boughs and the northern Europeans ivy, holly and spruce.
Germany is credited with the decorated Christmas tree tradition as early as 15th century in Freiburg when it is recorded that a guild put up a tree decorated with apples, flour paste wafers, tinsel and gingerbread. Christmas trees became so popular in the 15th century, laws were enacted to crack down on locals cutting pine branches. The oldest Christmas tree market traces its origin to the southwestern historic border of Germany in Strasbourg. Trees were sold unadorned as Weihnachtsbaum or “Christmas tree”.
The tree tradition came to America in the 18th and 19th centuries with central European immigrants but it didn’t widely take off until it was adopted by Queen Victoria of England and her German husband Prince Albert. A portrait of Queen Victoria with her children and husband surrounding a decorated Christmas tree with presents tucked underneath it widely circulated among women’s magazines in the mid 19th century, popularizing the tree in America.
See and experience the birthplace of many of our Christmas traditions on our Christkindl Markets Tour this December. This is a small group tour with only 12 spots. Rally your friends and family and register soon!

On our last day and 7th day of the Oktoberfest and Bavaria Tour, we had some special occasions to mark. Kara and Kyle were celebrating their 40th birthdays, Jill and Richard their one year wedding anniversary, and Matt and Vicki their 10th wedding anniversary. We had special Wies’n Herz made for them (meadow hearts) so they have a little sweet piece of decoration to remember this experience.
Don’t be fooled; these are not for eating, only decorating. As one of my friends once told me, “that cookie you gave me for Christmas wasn’t very good.” Yeah, hang it, don’t eat it.

Thank you for choosing us and our tour to celebrate!

Have you ever tried Glühwein? How about while meandering through market stalls on a cool winter day? Glühwein is everywhere at the Christkindl Markets in Germany. Glühwein is an ancient drink, going all the way back to the Romans during the height of their empire. They would heat and spice wine in the winter to help ward off illness and the cold. As they conquered parts of Gaul (parts of modern day Germany), the drink spread throughout the lands. What was once part of the winter solstice celebration Saturnalia, this winter warmer eventually became entwined with Christmas celebrations throughout Europe.
Warm your belly and your spirit on our Christkindl Markets Tour this December! This is a small group of affair limited to 12 people.

Annnnnnnd we made it to Oktoberfest! What a wonderful day with a really great group of people!

We started our day with Levi, The Thirsty Historian, for Weißwurst Frühstück (traditional Bavarian breakfast of white sausage, pretzel and wheat beer) at Schneider Bräuhaus.
After breakfast, we went to the Paulaner Microbrewery for a tour and our first taste of Fest Bier. And finally, we walked with Levi to the Fest with a short tour within the grounds and a table reservation at the Löwenbräu Festzelt (say it with me now “Lou-Ven-Broy Fest-selt”). Our reservations included lunch and 2 liters person. Wooo weee, great day!

Once the group learned of the German superstition that not looking into someone’s eyes while Prosting will lead to 7 years bad s*x, they took Prosting at every stop VERY seriously.

On the 5th day of our Oktoberfest and Bavaria Tour, we left Bamberg and made a bonus stop in Nuremberg for a city walk, bier garden stop at the old city wall and lunch at the Hausbrauerei Altstadthof. The Rotbier (or red lager) of Nuremberg is superb and Altstadthof excelled at making several varieties including a delicious Schwarzbier and Kellerbier.

After taking the high speed train to Munich, we broke for the night so our guests could rest up for the next 2 days of….OKTOBERFEST! Here we go!
