Tybee became the site of the first lighthouse to be erected on the South Atlantic coast in 1736. "Tybee" (pronounced Tie-bee) is a Euchee Indian word meaning "salt". Salt was a valuable resource not only to the indengenous population, but also later for the Spanish and French traders who stumbled upon this paradise. For hundreds of years, this beautiful island has been home to pirates, soldiers, fishermen, beachcombers, traders, vacationers and those of us who came to visit and just couldn't bring ourselves to leave.
