The owners of Downing Cottage, our rental at 1801 Downing Ave recommend stopping by Madeline’s on Moonstone Beach while visiting Cambria. Sunsets and wine are a perfect coast combo. The cozy wine bar offers a wonderful selection of wines, beers and small bites. Stools are set up facing the ocean so guests can enjoy the view along with their refreshments. Yes, you can see Zebras from Highway 1 while visiting Cambria! The zebras were brought to California by William Randolph Hearst for his private zoo at Hearst Castle.

The zoo, was dismantled in 1937 but over 120 zebras still remain on the land below the castle.

The zebras are completely wild; there is no one feeding or tracking the herd. They cannot be domesticated as they maintain an unfriendly attitude towards humans.

Baby zebras, called foals, weigh roughly 70 pounds at birth and can stand just 20 minutes later. The zebras breed year-round, so you never know when you’ll spot one of the youngsters!

Mornings and late afternoons are typically better times to spot the herd, however they truly keep to their own schedule and thus far have not been too keen to share it with humans.
