What is a Postpartum Doula?

A doula is a “caregiver”: Someone who is trained and experienced to help the new mother and family. This very important service provides knowledgeable, caring, and personal, unbiased support during those first few weeks as new parents. Childbirth preparation classes prepare you for the birth experience, but often there is not enough preparation for the new role as parents and how your life will ch

Validate the normal adjustment process
Supports mother through emotional vulnerablity
Supports father through transition to new role

Solutions to common breastfeeding and bottle-feeding challenges in the first weeks. Proper storage of breastmilk and/or formula. Pumping information and guidance. Household assistance, if requested. Prepare meals and snacks for the new mother and family. Cleans & prepares bottles and helps with nursery set-up. May do baby laundry or other light cleaning

Even though adults need to bathe daily here in the Louisiana heat, newborns don't! It's also really beneficial to hold off the bath for at lest 24 hours too!

Check out the new provincial “Delay the Bath” poster to support a hospital practice change in newborn care. Delaying the bath helps the newborn transition to the outside world by improving temperature control and stabilizing blood sugar levels. It also facilitates skin-to-skin contact and helps establish successful breastfeeding. .

Did you have a baby in another province? Or in another country? Did they delay the bath? Please share your experience...

Looking forward to presenting with a panel to perinatal care professionals on the topic of pregnancy care continuum.

Much attention is given to the pregnant woman but what of the postpartum woman? So often I meet postpartum women who describe feeling "isolated", "abandoned", and "suddenly not important" after coming home from delivery. This is heartbreaking and is being observed as one of the leading risk factors for postpartum mood disorders.
You are not alone. Support is available.

My Story

“I started Your New Village as a proving ground for the idea that a collaborative approach to parenting facilitates development of a child’s physical, social, and emotional well-being. Building on the groundwork of your current parenting skills, (Yes, even before your little one is born: You already have instinctual and learned skills to parent!) I can assist you with the care your new family addition deserves, and provide that assurance “Yes this is normal!” during the time changes are thrown at you frequently.”

Nicole started her professional career as a daycare and preschool teacher. Seeing a need for emotional support of child and family alike, she transitioned into one-on-family work as a private nanny. Friends became clients; Clients became friends. A special emphasis placed on the toddler years led Nicole to become a toddler specialist. She has worked extensively on continued training to help parents tackle the toddler years.

Through Your New Village, Nicole will be passionate in assisting you navigate through this adventure called parenthood. We live in a time where family is an open source concept; We do have a choice in who we call family, and the many ways a child can be raised in love. Open, accepting, and loving: Your New Village will be supportive of what you need to become a confident parent.
