I believe the charm of a London mews comes from its tucked-away location. A small alley of calm hidden from the hustle of a busy street.

Do you know where the name 'mews' comes from? Once upon a time, they were for horses and carriages, behind grand houses, sometimes with servants' quarters above. These days, they are highly desirable residential homes.

The word 'mew' means moulting, as this was also where royal hawks were kept during the season their feathers moulted, and they weren't used for hunting.

Here are some ideas on how to teach young kids about sustainability, why this is so important and a few tips for making it fun.

Here are 8 little things you can do to help protect Mother Earth 🌍, we challenge you to do at least one!

1️⃣ PLANT A TREE 🌳
Trees are important as they provide food and oxygen, which we and other species need to survive. Trees clean the air from excess carbon dioxide, which helps combat climate change. Everyone loves fresh air, right?

2️⃣ CYCLE MORE 🚲
Cycling is not only more beneficial to your mental and physical health, but also for Mother Earth. It cuts down on greenhouse gases, emits ZERO air pollutants, and reduces your ecological footprint. Did we mention it's so much fun?

3️⃣ BUY SECOND-HAND👚
Buying preloved helps as there's less demand for new items to be manufactured, transported and packaged. You can find good quality items online and at your local charity shops.

4️⃣ EAT SUSTAINABLE FOODS 🐟
Sustainable foods are produced by techniques that help to conserve natural resources with little impact on the environment. We want our kids to get nutritious and secure foods in the future, so read labels and do your research.

5️⃣ REDUCE, REUSE, RECYCLE ♻️
We hear this all the time, but the one that tends to be in the spotlight is RECYCLE. Whilst recycling is important and should be done when possible, we also need to REDUCE consumption and REUSE what we have.

6️⃣ CONSERVE WATER 💧
Although clean water may seem like an infinite resource, it is not. Water is not only essential for us to live but it grows our food, protects ecosystems and wildlife, reduces carbon footprint, and so much more. Conserve water where possible.

7️⃣ EDUCATE OTHERS 👨‍🏫
Once you have learnt about the importance and value of our environment, it's time to pass that information onto others, especially to our kids. The earlier we can create healthy habits, the better.

8️⃣ VOLUNTEER FOR CLEANUPS🙋
Not only are you cleaning up the beach, but you are saving animals, making seafood safer to consume, keeping toxic chemicals out of the water, disposing of waste safely, and more.

How does your travel affect the local community and the environment?

Despite 2020 being the year that it was, it has taught us how a lighter human impact can be positive for our planet, but also that so many livelihoods depend on tourism.

We choose suppliers that support local communities and avoid activities that have a negative impact on the world.

Are you a responsible traveller? Since the pandemic, is this a factor you will consider more in your travel plans?

Check out our blog post! to see how we will "Be More" this year and how you can "Be More" too! https://twopointfourtravel.com/it-is-time-to-be-more/

It’s Leap Day! An extra day in the year and a great chance to set an intention for the months ahead. The National Trust is asking us to make a promise for nature this year, and I'm happy to help them spread this message. I make an effort to get outside and appreciate nature every single day because I know it's good for my physical and mental health. Knowing this, we need to give back to nature because it gives so much to us. This year, my family is making the following promises:
🍎Reducing food miles/waste/packaging by growing more of our own food in our new garden. We can't wait to till the soil!
🐝Creating healthy habitats for wildlife, insects, bees, and butterflies. We already have the kids on board to create a bug hotel.
🦦Helping to keep our local rivers clean by volunteering with clean up projects
🌳Reducing our carbon footprint by planting trees and travelling closer to home as much as possible.
What promise will you make?

At this time last year, we were planning our Easter trip to Norway. If you're in the throes of planning a trip like this, maybe this can help.

Three hikes you can enjoy in the Lofoten Islands in Norway, with kids, and staying at Hattvika Lodge.

I stumbled upon this blog post from our first visit to Ham House, not long after we moved to England. It was so fun to look back on and remember what it was like to explore this area with fresh eyes. Just a quick jaunt across the river, we have now visited more times than I can count, and it is somewhere we always take visitors. National Trust

Today is our 18th wedding anniversary, so I’m sharing this blog post from when we took the girls to stay in the castle in Tuscany, where we stayed for our wedding. http://offcoursebird.com/twelve-years-later/

The pictures above were taken inside and outside the Basilica di Santa Maria, in the town of Impruneta, Italy. Besides a tinge of fame for beautifully crafted terracotta, this small town, in the Chianti region of Tuscany, is not well…

Plans for 2019? Read more books and travel to more places. Actually, our 2019 travel plans involve revisiting new areas of countries we’ve already been to. I still get a thrill when going somewhere new and mentally adding a country to the 50-or-so we’ve already been to. But there is also something special about having the opportunity to go back and experience a place on a deeper level. When people ask me about my favourite places in the world, I usually respond with a place where I have been the happiest while there. Places that fill my heart and soul with more than just iconic building or even incredible scenery. It’s a feeling I’ve always found difficult to put into words.

Saying goodbye to a great year and sharing a few things that transformed it from good to great. ...Plus my 2018 reading list!

I can’t help but be a little sad to say goodbye to 2018. Overall, it was a great year. At this time last year, we weren’t sure how it would turn out. It was just before Christmas (2017) that we…

Here come the very dark months. So, here’s a little sunshine from our recent trip to Cyprus.

You know the feeling…summer has come to an end, but you’re not ready to push the sandals to the back of the closet and pull out those woolly sweaters yet. Thankfully, there is sunshine to be found in the Eastern…

Every year, in November, the weirs are lifted between Richmond and Teddington Lock for what is known as the Thames Annual Draw Off.
This allows the river to drain to natural low tide levels so the Port of London can carry out maintenance work.
It also enables workers and volunteers to perform an inspection and rubbish clean up of the riverbed.
