CasitaTrek is about the fun of traveling and exploring in a small travel trailer. It also contains notes and photos about our interests in BBQ, 4 Wheeling, and whatever else grabs our fancy. Dave & Ruth have been Casita owners since 2007, but have a lifetime of travel camping experience.

On our Spring trip, warm weather has been elusive, until we decided to go to Florida. Finally sitting outside, wearing shorts. I don’t know about what your experience has been, but with rare exception, the past year has been a chilly one for camping. Able to do much less outdoor relaxing than usual.

Things to do in Quartzsite, 2019 edition: the Blythe Intaglios are prehistoric ground formations. Located along the Colorado River drainage, and are well marked on US 95 north of Blythe, CA. they seem to be directionally oriented, and there are anthropomorphic and animalian figures. There’s another one north of Quartzsite of Plomosa Road.

I just ran across this article. The book looks like it covers a lot of what I was thinking about during our recent trek through the Four Corners.

Five years ago I visited for the first time the “Puebloan Heartland,” defined in this book as the area between Mesa Verde to the north and Chaco Canyon to the south. I knew of Mesa Verde National Park and Chaco Canyon National Historical Park but was unaware that these famous Ancestral Puebloan ...

We've prowled around the Four Corners for the past 30 years, doing a lot of backcountry exploring on 4WD accessible only roads. Towing a trailer to many of those sites is not possible, but our goal for this trip was to re-visit several locations, and we threw in the North Rim of the Grand Canyon as a bonus.

After 11 happy years trekking in our Casita, last spring we sprang for an Oliver Legacy Elite II, otherwise known as a “Casita on steroids”. This model is double axle, double hulled, and configured like a Casita Liberty and Spirit were joined at the hip. We still consider it our “casita”- it’s still a little house, at only 18 feet living space.

At Homolovi State Park, Winslow AZ, there are several Pueblo ruins from the 1200-1300 era, some partially excavated. Winslow also has the iconic “standing on the corner in Winslow, Arizona” statue, and the “there’s a girl, my lord, in a flat bed Ford” mural.

Things to do in Quartzsite- go to Palm Canyon in the KofA National Wildlife Refuge, and take a beautiful 1/2 mile hike on a good solid trail to get a view of the only naturally occurring palms in AZ. Remember a walking stick and water.

As we continue our adventure boondocking in the KofA National Wildlife Refuge, today we were invaded by a small group from rvforum.net. It’s a HUGE forum designed to be all things to any kind of wheeled RV. So we get humongous, generator running, Motorhomes about 100 feet from us. The organizer did graciously stop by to talk before they moved in, and they seem otherwise well behaved. But, as I said to the SO, we are small trailer snobs, and recoil from such conspicuous consumption. OTOH, they wouldn’t reject us for being a tiny little fiberglass trailer, so maybe we’ll join them. OK, probably not.

The friendliest place on the web for anyone with an RV or an interest in RVing.

We took our new tow for a 4WD test in the KofA. This trail went to a natural tank in a box canyon which was still holding water after about 3 months with no rain in the area. Sign of Bighorn around the tank. The area also has a number of sites, usually under a cliff shelf, with grinding holes like this one. This one was over a foot deep, and there were 5 others in this alcove.

New Years Eve at the KofA National Wildlife Refuge, King Canyon Road. We’ll be here until the black tank is full, then will relocate somewhere nearby. KofA is an acronym for King of Arizona mine, a gold mining operation in the heart of the Refuge. In the wildlife refuge, there are Desert Bighorn, mountain lion, bobcats, and a rare species of pronghorn from Mexico. Nobody ever sees these critters.
