Interview with Chef Boonnum Thongngoen from Am Thai Bistro in Flatbush Brooklyn
This seven-table Thai restaurant is run by Bangkok native Boonnum Thongngoen. She got her start cooking seafood dishes on Yaowarat Road in Chinatown. I tried som tam, crispy duck salad, and khao soi, which was my personal favorite. Am Thai Bistro also has a nice selection of non-alcoholic drinks.
Have you been to Flatbush? Or Kensington? Am Thai is located along the border between the two Brooklyn neighborhoods.
What are some of your favorite Thai dishes?

Trying some Portuguese dishes at No Pao 100 Reservas in Newark’s Ironbound District
Greetings from Newark's Ironbound district! This four-square-mile community south of Penn Station is home to dozens of Brazilian and Portuguese-owned businesses. There's a Ferry Street exit from Penn Station. Walk a couple blocks from there, and you'll see dozens of restaurants, bakeries, and even a souvenir shop or two.
Most restaurants are on or within a block of Ferry Street. Portugal is located at the western end of the Iberian Peninsula, so dishes are heavy on fish and seafood. While you can find a few Brazilian all-you-can-eat steakhouses and plenty of 𝘗𝘢𝘴𝘵𝘦𝘪𝘴 𝘋𝘦 𝘕𝘢𝘵𝘢 in the neighborhood, there's more so much more.
The Ironbound is known as Newark's Live, Work, Play neighborhood. I started coming here after reading about the neighborhood in a Lonely Planet book before a 2007 trip to Lisbon. It's located just four miles north of Newark International Airport.
Portuguese natives Claudia and her husband, Luis run Go Ironbound which is part of Raise Newark Inc.

Trying Southeast Asian Kuih at Lady Wong Pastry in the East Village NYC
Have you tried kuih? Here's an August 2022 interview with Lady Wong co-owner Mogan Anthony. We discuss how the hottest East Village pastry shop since Veniero's got started as well as the labor and ingredients that go into these (mostly) steamed desserts. I also sample four different kuih prepared by Mo's wife and business partner, Seleste Tan.
Learn more about it in my latest InsideHook piece https://www.insidehook.com/article/new-york/bakery-kuih-east-village
It's the story of Lady Wong, but also an introduction to kuih and other Southeast Asian desserts interpreted by two Malaysia natives who moved to New York from Singapore.

How to eat Georgian dumplings 🥟 (khinkali) at 18th Ave Cafe G in Brooklyn
Despite being ten subway stops from Manhattan, 18th Ave Café G feels more Chelsea than Bensonhurst. No space is wasted in this cleverly designed small café on the border between Bath Beach and Bensonhurst. Owner and Imereti native Maya Tsulaia designed the small dining area along with a few friends.
Café G (for Georgia) is her first business, but you'd never guess that, as few other Georgian eateries in Brooklyn can match its character. The south-facing wall is lined with Georgian movie posters, which hang above carefully painted quotes from each respective film. And then there's the food.
Nearly three-quarters of their customers are Georgian. You'll see plenty of (mostly regular) customers come and go as the majority of their business is takeout. But we recommend ordering at the counter and dining in. The cool lounge music is ideal for people-watching, which you can do from one of four high seats facing the busy 18th Avenue thoroughfare.
Khinkalis are the top seller from the 27-item menu. They sell the traditional beef/pork version, but you can also request cheese and/or mushroom. And you can't go wrong with the khachapuri, which comes from Maya's home region of Imereti.

Trying some Georgian dishes at ASSAIA in Bath Beach, Brooklyn
Assaia Restaurant Club and Lounge is one of the newest Georgian restaurants in Brooklyn. Opened in December 2021, Assaia is a larger and more upscale version of Toné Café, which the same owners opened back in 2014. The main dining room is decorated with paintings by Georgian artist Hatu Chkheidze. Her brother Nick and his wife Eka make up two-thirds of the partners, who can now claim the largest Georgian restaurant in Bath Beach.
As far as the food goes, you can expect the same giant khinkali and soft bread that Toné Café customers have come to expect. But Eka wants customers to try other Georgian dishes as well. When asked to elaborate, the classical pianist and former music critic suggests the shkmeruli, chanakhi and gebzhalia. The latter is made up of garlic and mint, wrapped in thin sulguni over a pool of medium-thick Georgian ricotta. You won't see it on most other menus.
They have live entertainment in the main dining room starting at 8 p.m. from Friday to Sunday. The piano plays itself in the west room, which has a banquet hall vibe.
