Here I go again...the motto of my agency..." we know because we go"... this time I am off to Amsterdam for an intensive Travel Industry River Cruise Expo. This will be my 2nd time attending the ASTA (American Society of Travel Advisors) EXPO. We have the opportunity to stay on one of 12 different ships as “hotels”. I will be staying on the luxury Tauck River Cruise line.

In between catching up with many friends from over the years, I will also eat and tour and be entertained on the ships of Viking River Cruises, AMA Waterways, Riviera River Cruises, Riverside Luxury Cruises, and of course Uniworld Boutique River Cruises. I sample them all so I can really know the differences and distinctions. I will have an immersive educational 2 weeks, and I have lots of excursions and touring planned in the Netherlands, and on the Rhine, and in Belgium. I will at the end finally get to tour the Keukenhof Gardens at the very beginning of Tulip season and next year plan a proper tulip time cruise. The British Airways Concorde Supersonic Jet seen yesterday casually floating up the east river under the Brooklyn Bridge. It was being moved from the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum to the Brooklyn Navy Yard to undergo some restoration and will be back on display next year!

So, I’m just going to put this out here, because it’s been happening A LOT lately with travel opening up everywhere!

If you don't want to use a Travel Advisor for your trip, PLEASE DON'T ask us for advice/help when your trip goes south, you have questions about your trip, or a problem arises.

We Travel Advisors make the majority of our income through commissions from cruise lines, resorts, and hotels that we book for you. And just so you know, 99% of the time, booking airfare alone doesn't make us a dime! When you don’t book through us, you’re giving your money away to that online booking engine (did you know that Travelocity, Expedia, Trivago, and similar online travel companies all make a commission off of you?), resort, cruise line, hotel, etc., instead of helping your Travel Advisor friend make a living.

When you book travel plans on your own and something goes wrong, or you have questions, or want to make changes to your trip, etc., you have no one to advocate for you, fix it, or help you to understand why a thing is a thing.

So please don’t be dismissive of your Travel Advisor friends because you think you can find a better deal, or because Costco is giving you a $500 gift card (free toilet paper won't save you in the middle of the night when your flight gets cancelled, but your Travel Advisor will). Often, we have exclusive perks for OUR clients! Many people like to do their own research online and that’s fine. I tell prospective clients to do all the research they want and then come to me to get the best deal!

When it comes down to it, you’re still going to be asking said Travel Advisor friend for help or advice, at the same time taking away the potential for him or her to make a living. Remember - you don’t want to work for free, and neither do we.

I loved this movie about a *travel agent* in Vietnam, undercover to purchase a tour company. It' was a decent story and the scenery of Southeast Asia was beautiful.

I am going myself this year on a scouting trip and planning a couple of group trips by land and by sea in 2024 and 2025. Time to explore this part of the world for me. How about you? Do you want to go with me, and by land or by sea? Watch this to wet your wanderlust!
