Love them or hate them, buffets are making a comeback

"In September, Marriott rolled out new complimentary breakfast offerings at around 3,000 hotels after a survey found that 75% of guests wanted a hot breakfast buffet over continental options. Rolling out throughout the winter, these new buffet offerings include build-your-own-breakfast bowls, cage-free eggs, customizable sandwiches and hot sauces like Sriracha and Cholula."

A petition seeking to rename Columbus, Ohio, “Flavortown” to honor native Guy Fieri has attracted thousands of signatures.

“Columbus is an amazing city, but one whose name is tarnished by the very name itself. Its namesake, Christopher Columbus, is in The Bad Place because of all his ra**ng, slave trading, and genocide. That's not exactly a proud legacy,” the petition states, referencing both a line from the NBC series “The Good Place” and passages in the explorer’s own diary describing atrocities committed on the island of Hispaniola.

“Why not rename the city Flavortown? The new name is twofold. For one, it honors Central Ohio's proud heritage as a culinary crossroads and one of the nation's largest test markets for the food industry,” it goes on to state. “Secondly, cheflebrity Guy Fieri was born in Columbus, so naming the city in honor of him (he's such a good dude, really) would be superior to its current nomenclature.”

Buffet restaurants like Cabanas aboard Disney Cruise Line could opt to switch to cafeteria-style dining instead of self-serve stations. For example, It was recently revealed that Royal Caribbean may eliminate buffets altogether once cruising resumes, and more than likely that cruise line will turn their buffets into “something more akin to a restaurant.”

The $100 million, 25,000-square-foot, 600-seat Bacchanal Buffet filed paperwork earlier this year to remodel a section of the food line and has now revised the plans to allocate an estimated construction budget of $2.4 million for the makeover. The renovation at the buffet at Caesars Palace focuses on a 2,120-square-foot area, and the changes will affect the existing food counters, service equipment, and the ceiling and floor finishes.
