SAN FRANCISCO CLASSIC BUILDINGS! Today: The ALCOA Building (1964)

Skidmore, Owings & Merrill
Battery Street between Clay & Washington Sts.

This powerful skyscraper anticipates Chicago's larger John Hancock Building and provides a visual guarantee against disruptive seismic forces. Twelve mammoth X braces act as giant trusses. Sheathed in bronze-colored anodized aluminum, the raking diagonal eco-skeleton projects three and one-half feet beyond the window plane reducing the weight and mass of the building

V. C. Morris Store ( Now "ISAIA Napoli", an Italian men’s fashion store)

Location: 140 Maiden Lane, San Francisco (near Union Square)
Architect: Frank Lloyd Wright
Built: 1949
Origin of name: Morris owned a shop specializing in fine
crystal and decor.

Wright's only San Francisco structure was designed at the same time as his Guggenheim Museum, with what critic Elizabeth Mark called "a ramp that spirals up like Jacob's ladder" "The first interior space of this kind to be created," historian Siegfried Gideon observed.

Unlike most modern stores, which strut their stuff behind glass walls, the front is very much a blank facade, except for a vertical band of windows lit from within, and a deeply recessed arched doorway that recalls the work of Wright's Chicago forebear Louis Sullivan.
