Titled as the second-highest waterfall in Sri Lanka with a staggering height of 720 feet (220 meters), Diyaluma falls is undoubtedly one of the most majestic waterfalls this little island is proud to possess!

Located in the town of Koslanda in the district of Badulla, Diyaluma falls is a six-hour-long journey from Colombo and can be reached via the Colombo-Badulla highway. The Falls are oft-visited due to the fact that the foot of it is just an hour away from Ella, which is Sri Lanka's hottest tourist spot. Since the fall is situated in the midst of Koslanda, the city brims with friendly locals waiting to accompany you on your escapade, whether it is just to offer directions or to take you on a journey of a lifetime all the way to the top!

Unawatuna is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Sri Lanka. It has the most beautiful beaches and is the ideal location for a beach stay which is an hour ride from the capital city of Colombo.

The main beach at Unawatuna is popular with both tourists and locals. The wide stretched beaches offer some good swimming and a part of the beach is occupied with sunbeds to rent. On the west end of the beach, there is a little walk to a pagoda statue overlooking the bay.

The beach is directly connected to the city center with loads of little restaurants and bars. There is a great beach vibe going on here even after sunset, and is a must visit. The most Instagrammable place of Sri Lanka is without a doubt the beach swing at Wijaya Beach which is also a must visit place.

One of the most visited places in the city is the Sri Maha Bodhi or the sacred bo tree, a slender fig or Ficus religiosa supported by iron crutches is the oldest historically documented tree on earth, this grew from a sapling taken over 2,200 years ago from the very same tree under which Lord Buddha gained enlightenment.

And also holds a place as one of the Solosmasthana (the 16 sacred sites of veneration) and the Atamasthana (the eight sacred sites in the ancient sacred city of Anuradhapura), which are places believed to have been visited by Buddha during his three visits to Sri Lanka.

Jetavanaramaya Stupa:
Built by king Mahasen and completed by his son Sirimeghavanna, in 273 -301 AD, Jethavanaramaya is documented as the largest sthupa in Sri Lanka, with a height over 400 feet it is considered to be one of the tallest stupas in the world, largest brick building ever built and 3rd largest structure.

Know your Sri Lankan History; City: Kandy

A World Heritage Site of Sri Lanka that sits pretty in a valley surrounded by rings of mountains and trees, Kandy was once home to the Kandyan Kings of yore in the 16th century and a fountainhead for all the music, art crafts and culture in the country. The Kandyan Kingdom was founded in the late 15th century, and continued until 1815 when the last king, Sri Wickrama Rajasinghe, was finally deposed by the British.

Temple of the Tooth Relic:
Kandy houses the world famous Temple of the Tooth Relic, which is considered to be one of the most famous Buddhist temples in the world. It was built to protect the sacred tooth relic thought to belong to Lord Buddha, which has been enshrined in Sri Lanka for hundreds of years.

Royal Botanical Gardens:
Stroll through the stunning Royal Botanical Gardens which was created by the British in the 19th century is Sri Lanka’s largest landscaped gardens, spanning over 60 hectares. It’s now home to 4,000 different species of plants and over 10,000 trees, showcasing all of Sri Lanka’s flora and many other tropical plants not native to the island. It is also known for its extensive collection of orchids.

Cultural Show:
Travelers should also take the time to see the famous Kandyan Cultural show in which various forms of Kandyan dancing is depicted which was once native to the area.

Esala Perahera:
One of the oldest and grandest of all Buddhist festivals in Sri Lanka, featuring dancers, jugglers, and lavishly decorated elephants in Kandy is the Esala Perahera. The Perahera is celebrated in the months of July or August that is believed to commemorate the first teaching given by the Buddha after he attained enlightenment. It is celebrated to honour the Sacred Tooth Relic and the four guardians Gods Natha, Vishnu, Kataragama and Goddess Pattini.

Know your Sri Lankan History;
City: Ella

The small town of Ella is well known for its natural paradise around its location and tourist town there that becomes party central once dusk falls. Ella town is a delight to be in, while maintaining a rural feel it caters to thousands of tourists.

Nine Arch Bridge:
Built at 3100m above sea level, among the craggy peaks of the Central Highlands, the Nine Arch Bridge is one of the main attractions in Ella, surrounded by the beautiful hills of the central highlands, shrouded in rolling tea estates, the tall trees of cloud forests and intriguing natural formations forming a viaduct between the Demodara and Ella railway stations. The Demodara railway station located 912.5m above sea level is the third last station on the Main Line. All the trains that run on the Main Line, including the Podi Menike and Udarata Menike express trains stop at the station. The Bridge has stood solid from its time of creation in 1921, built entirely out of brick, rock and cement; without a single piece of steel. With a small 30-minute walk through the jungle, you will reach a piece this beautiful architecture that is hidden between lush green tea fields.

Ravana Ella - Waterfall:
The beautiful Ravana Falls which is ranked as one of the widest falls in Sri Lanka was named after the legendary King Ravana, which is connected to the famous Indian epic, the Ramayana. It is said that Ravana who was the King of Sri Lanka at the time, had kidnapped Princess Sita, and had hidden her in the caves behind this waterfall, now simply known as the Ravana Ella Cave, according to legends.

Mini Adam’s Peak:
Little Adam’s Peak in Ella, however, is the perfect cousin of the larger peak to hike with your training gloves on. It’s not as exhausting to hike; and, at just 1141m of height, can be climbed by even an inexperienced hiker. The views are straight out of a fantasy movie and possibly even better than that of the larger mountain.

One of my favorite little adventures in Sri Lanka was the day trip I took to Pigeon Island — a protected national park just off the coast of Trincomalee.

After one of the bumpiest speed boat rides I’ve ever experienced, we skidded on-shore one of the most picturesque, deserted pieces of paradise I’ve ever seen.

I spent hours that morning swimming and snorkeling in the clearest turquoise waters, among giant sea turtles 🐢 and some 30 blacktip reef sharks 🦈 and some of my favorite colorful fish 🐠 who inhabit the island’s thriving coral reef system.

This area of Sri Lanka (including the little seaport town of Trincomalee) rarely makes it onto traveler’s itineraries, but I can’t recommend it enough. It’s secluded and biodiverse as all get-out and so stinking pretty, and I promise that a day on Pigeon Island can cure all woes. 🤗
