On this day 110 years ago, April 14th, RMS Titanic received its final ice warning at 9:40 pm. This message was never relayed back to the bridge. Just miles away, the SS Californian was stopped, surrounded by ice.

On this day 110 years ago, on April 5. 1912,
SS Californian left London under the command of Captain Stanley Lord, embarking on a journey to Boston. Records suggest that Stanley Lord’s ship happened to be close to empty, not having any passengers on board.
Nine days later, it will be the closest ship to the RMS Titanic disaster location, and probably the only one that could arrive in time to help.
