On this day in 1842: Scottish blacksmith and inventor Kirkpatrick Macmillan tested the world's first pedal bicycle. He rode his heavy contraption 68 miles, over two days, from Dumfriesshire to Glasgow. He also landed himself a 5 shilling fine by hitting a pedestrian in the Gorbals. Ouch 💥

Anni fa, da un'amica scozzese il cui padre era allevatore e giudice della Highlands Cattle Society, ho appreso che le mucche delle Highlands amano l'acqua, sanno nuotare e spesso, se hanno caldo, vanno a rinfrescarsi nei ruscelli o in riva al mare.
Il mio stupore davanti alla cosa è stato pari a quello della mia amica nello scoprire che le mucche alpine di mio cognato, invece, non hanno idea di che cosa sia il nuoto e, a maggior ragione, il mare. 😁

Beautiful Highland pony on the Isle of Rum. The line of ponies from this island are known for having the silver gene. This gene lightens black pigment in ponies causing black manes to go blonde. Highland ponies are equally at home high up on a hill, or down by the seashore. This breed was developed in the highlands and islands of Scotland as a crofters pony and are also well known as a deer stalking pony (see my other posts). They are valued for their strength, kindness and easy keeping. A lot of tour guides will tell you that you need to rub the nose of Greyfriars Bobby in Edinburgh for good luck.

SPOILER ALERT: You actually don’t.

Trust me, in the list of must-do things to do when visiting Edinburgh rubbing this iconic statue shouldn't even be on the list.

Let me tell you why:
It's just a myth! Ok, Scotland is a land full of myths and legends what harm can this one do? Well, the number of people touching this doggy nose is causing damage as it wears down the bronze. And because Bobby is one of Edinburgh's best-loved monuments he is needing constant repairs to stop his nose from disappearing completely.

In a time when are all thinking about sustainable travel the old adage "Take only photographs, leave only footprints" will save poor old Bobby's sore snout.
