2025 marks the Jubilee Year for Rome, a sacred time at the Vatican. And while it will be a busy year for Italy, you can still have a great vacation by planning ahead.

The Vatican will remain open daily, and timed tours will ensure that you can still experience the Vatican itself, Sistine Chapel, and St. Peter's Basilica as usual.

Many hotels in Rome will fill up early, especially over the time of special Jubilee events, so advanced planning is important. However, the rest of Italy will remain relatively unaffected, so your plans will be smooth sailing!

It's no secret that travel costs more than it used to. But there are a few ways to ensure that you're getting the most value from your vacation budget.

>> Keep your dates as flexible as possible, and fly on weekdays versus weekends if you can.

>> Consider traveling during shoulder season, the time of year just before and after peak travel. In most of Europe, that's spring and fall, and rates will nearly always be better.

>> Step away from some of the major tourist spots and explore the smaller towns and hidden gems. In many cases, you'll enjoy fewer crowds and a more meaningful and local experience.

>> And work with a travel advisor (😉) that may be able to offer different ideas for how to get from A to B or advise on the things you might be able to skip and those you won't want to miss.

It's not too late to experience the Northern Lights this winter. ❄️ The Aurora is typically visible in Iceland and much of Scandinavia until March, and this year's lights are stronger than ever.

Planning a trip to the UK or Europe this year? 🛑

Starting January 8, Americans traveling to England, Scotland, or Wales will need to apply for an ETA (electronic travel authorization) prior to their trip. This applies to everyone, including children and babies, and even when just transiting through a UK airport.

The application process is simple and costs £10. Find 'UK ETA' through the app store on your phone or tablet. You'll provide your passport details and answer some questions, and you'll receive your approval within about 3 days.

Starting in May, the European Union will begin a similar ETA process, so stay tuned for details.

What are your holiday traditions? 🎄 Here are a few great ones around the world.

🇮🇸 Iceland: In Iceland, 13 mischievous Yule Lads visit children in the 13 nights leading up to Christmas. Kids leave shoes in their windows, and the Yule Lads leave gifts or rotten potatoes depending on their behavior.

🇯🇵 Japan: In Japan, many families enjoy KFC fried chicken for Christmas dinner, a tradition that started in the 1970s after a successful KFC marketing campaign.

🇫🇮 Finland: In Finland, families visit saunas on Christmas Eve to relax and cleanse before festivities. The official hometown of Santa is also in Finland, where you can visit his workshop, village, and reindeer.

🇦🇺 Australia: With Christmas falling in the summer, Australians often celebrate with beach barbecues, cricket matches, and outdoor festivities.

It's estimated that a whopping 119 million Americans will be traveling over the holidays this year. And while we're all in the thick of it, here are some of my top tips for ensuring a smooth travel day.

→ If you're departing from a busy airport, prebook your parking at .
→ Check in online for your flight whenever you can to save time, and give yourself plenty of time at airports.
→ Pack your carry on with absolutely all essential documents, snacks, portable chargers, a reusable water bottle, headphones, extra clothes, and anything else you might need to be comfortable or anything you must have for later.
→ Air tags are great to keep a watch on your checked luggage, and it's helpful to put something colorful or unique on your bag to make it easier to find later.
→ Stay flexible if you can. Book refundable hotels and rental cars. Have a plan B for getting from A to B just in case you experience travel delays or weather gets in the way.
→ Dress in layers through the airport, and if you need something like a coat for your destination, keep it with you through the journey.
→ Get travel insurance to protect your trip and assist just in case there are any bumps in the road.

Country #123: Cabo Verde, Africa 🇨🇻

The country of Cabo Verde is made up of 10 islands off the west coast of Africa. The terrain across the islands is a complete mix of desert, jungle, volcano and mountains. And the culture here is totally unique, being a blend of its Portuguese past and West African influences.

Some of the best things to do here:
- Beaches and water sports in Sal or Boa Vista
- Dune bikes and quad rides around the desert
- Tarrafal and Serra Malagueta park on Santiago
- Volcano hike on Fogo
- True culture in Sao Vicente and Sao Antao

Planning a trip is about more than picking a destination—timing can make or break your travel experience.

It can be a matter of whether you have to wait in line for hours to get into the top European sightseeing spots or whether you actually get to witness the animal migrations on your African safari. And with things like weather, local festivals, and holiday crowds, there's a lot to consider.

Shoulder season is my favorite time of year for a European getaway—that's the time before and after peak season, or spring and fall in most European countries. You'll get a good balance of nice weather, fewer crowds, and better rates during that time.

And for trips to places like much of Asia and Central and South America, we need to talk about rainy seasons and local holiday times that might look different than what we are used to at home.
