My name is DJ and I have been an entreprenuer for 30 years. I have a Master's Degree in Sociology and "All-But-Dissertation" towards my Ph.D. I left the Doctoral program in 1985, due to internal departmental conflicts that placed insurmountable barriers to my completion of the Doctoral program. I was ready to get out into the real world anyway and start my career when the opportunity presented its
elf to me to work with a couple of friends in the photography business. I was living in Knoxville, TN at the time - going to UT-Knoxville - but soon realized that I loved photography and traveling over the country doing portrait fund-raising programs, so I bought a house in Cleveland, TN, the US hub for portrait fund-raising companies. I was able to travel and see every state in the Continental US and worked in most of them. I continued in this business for 20 years, creating my own photography company in which I was owner, bookkeeper, manager, one of the photographers, and sales consultant. It was a very formative time for me, as I soon realized things about myself. I found out early on that I was not there to sell my portraits, but rather allow my portraits to sell themselves. I also re-discovered something else about myself - I have an empathetic heart. In the early years of the business, I actually had to leave the table to have a cry as a customer was counting out their change in order to purchase a picture of their loved one. I have bought more than one portrait package for customers while I was on the road. I just never was a pushy sales person. I don't believe in gimicky promotions either. I have always been straightforward about the product and the pricing. I did become very successful in the photographic business, but I was also able to sleep at night with my peace of mind intact. I believe if you are offering something that others consider valuable, then you don't have to push the product or idea or whatever on them. You present what you have. Supply options and details.
