Day of the Dead Cemetery Tour

Saturday October 28 and Sunday October 29, 2023

***BACK BY POPULAR DEMAND*** Join us on this very popular tour focused on the Day of the Dead ceremonies in the town of Pomuch. See how local families honor their deceased relatives, Learn about Maya funerary practices dating back thousands of years. Hear a local guide explain the Day of Dead ceremonies and why they persist in the modern world. You will see for yourself the cleaning of the bones and hair of the ancestors in the cemetery crypts, the altars that are constructed for them and the annual upkeep of the grounds and crypts.

We will first visit the town of Becal where you will see how the famous Panama hats are made from beginning to end. It’s a fascinating and surprising process. Buy a hat to cover your head for the rest of the day.

Pomuch is famous for keeping this Maya ritual alive. A local guide will explain everything you want to know about how and why the local tradition is kept alive and thriving. We will pop into the “Panaderia Pan de Pomuch”. Believe it or not but the bread from Pomuch is famous nationwide. We’ll get a chance to learn the interesting history of this bakery and have the chance to see and buy the many different types of bread available. After leaving Pomuch we'll have lunch in the charming town of Calkiní, right across the street from the imposing and beautiful church. And then....

Like a few years back we're offering two options for the day.

SATURDAY OCTOBER 28
If you have guests or have never had the chance to visit Mucuyche Hacienda and Cenotes this is the perfect opportunity. After lunch in Calkiní we'll visit the local cemetery if there is enough time. But we have a date at Mucuyche and it's a fabulous experience. I've never had a customer who wasn't thrilled with the chance to visit the hacienda and swim between the two gorgeous cenotes in a marvelous setting. Includes a guide who will make sure you're fitted with an appropriate life vest and accompany the group in the two completely different cenotes. Don't worry, its a very easy entrance and exit from the water.

From there we'll have a little free time at the pool/restaurant/bar before we need to head back to Merida.

Tour is limited to 12 people. The cost for this option is 1,850 pesos for non-Yucatan residents, 1,650 for Yucatan residents and only 1,590 with your INAPAM card. Tour leaves Merida from Santa Ana at 8:00 and will return by 5:00

Sunday October 29
On the way back to Merida we’ll stop at two smaller pueblitos to see the Day of the Dead activities. These are locations where tourists never go.

After lunch we'll visit the cemetery at Calkiní where you will see the large contrast with the Pomuch cemetery. From there we'll go to the village of Nunkiní which has three distinct styles of crypts and graves. You'll be amazed at the loving care and deep respect the relatives of the ancestors take with the maintaining the cemetery.

Tour is limited to 14 people. Total cost is 1,200 pesos per person. Note that the price of the tour has remained the same despite the inflation of the past two years. Tour leaves Merida from Santa Ana at 8:30 and will return by 5:00.

Book your spot on on this excursion highlighting the Ruta de los Conventos or the Convent Route. Step back in time and see the progress of the Colonial era of the Yucatan through a carefully curated itinerary. We will visit churches dating from the 16th and 17th century.

What sets this tour apart is the that we have engaged FOUR local guides to give us special access to the most iconic churches on the route. These beautiful churches are closed to the public between noon and 4pm making it impossible to see everything on your own in one day.

We start the tour in Acanceh and we will take advantage of the location to first take a look at the interesting Maya site. Dating back to the pre-classic with the corresponding Peten type architecture far different than the late Puuc style seen at sites such as Uxmal. You’ll get a description of the iconography and its meaning through the early classic masks on the pyramid.

The Convents and Churches

Acanceh - A great example of a Maya site next to a colonial plaza. The Parroquia de Nuestra Señora de la Navidad was constructed under Franciscan direction from cut stones removed from the Maya structures. The church was remodeled two years ago making it a great place to start our tour.

Tecoh - First constructed in the 17th century this is a handsome rose colored convent and church. It features a gorgeous “ratablo” or devotional structure with niches containing statues of patron saints behind the altar.

Tekit - The ex-convent and Parroquia de San Antonio de Padua was first built in the 16th century under the infamous Fray Diego de Landa to evangelize the local population. Although small, it is extremely photogenic.

Chumayel - No tour of the area would be complete without a visit to the Temple de la Purísima Concepción where we’ll get special access to see the famous crucifix of Cristo Negro or Black Christ up close and personal! Don’t worry, you’ll learn the whole story behind it. Chumayel is also where the most important historical document of the early post-colonial period was found - the Chilam Balam.

Teabo - Located in a town well-know for its embroidery, the ex-convent and Parroquia de San Pedro and San Pablo was built in the 17th century. Inside you’ll be greeted by another ratablo or altarpiece flanked by a pair of sculpted figures used as columns. Of special mention are the murals done in the 17th century by local Maya artists that are original and unrestored while remaining in excellent condition.

Maní - A beautiful town and ex-convent Maní is Pueblo Mágico and a popular destination. Another renovation made the Iglesia de San Miguel Arcángel truly captivating. Famous for the disastrous burning of existing Maya codices (books) by Fray Diego de Landa in his drive to stamp out all Maya knowledge Maní is sure to please everyone on the tour. In Maní we’ll have lunch at the well-known Principe Tutul-Xiu Restaurant featuring Yucatan cuisine.

We will first visit the town of Becal where you will see how the famous Panama hats are made from beginning to end. It’s a fascinating and surprising process. Buy a hat to cover your head for the rest of the day.

We will stop in three villages to visit the cemeteries where the Day of the Dead Rituals are held. Pomuch is famous for keeping this Maya ritual alive. A local guide will explain everything you want to know about how and why the local tradition is kept alive and thriving. We will pop into the “Panaderia Pan de Pomuch”. Believe it or not but the bread from Pomuch is famous nationwide. We’ll get a chance to learn the interesting history of this bakery and have the chance to see and buy the many different types of bread available. We will have lunch at the woman-owned Restaurant Xkanlol. It’s a very clean and comfortable place where you’ll be served a portion of the iconic “pib”. As most of you know it’s wrapped with banana leaves and cooked underground. You can order other food and drinks, including a cold beer to wash everything down.

On the way back to Merida we’ll stop at two smaller pueblitos to see the Day of the Dead ceremonies. These are locations where tourists never go. The first is the very small village of Santa Cruz located just south of the beautiful Hacienda Blanca Flor. You’ll get a peek at the very large hacienda church as we drive by.

Our last stop is the pretty, clean and unspoiled pueblito of Nunkiní. The cemetery is extremely well maintained by the local residents and shows a deep respect for their ancestors. Again, this is a spot that tourists never visit and we’ll be very respectful as we view local residents and their customs.
