🌲👉Ranking East Coast National Parks From Good to Great

After visiting all of the national parks on the US East Coast, here’s how they compare. 👇

6️⃣ Congaree, South Carolina
Unique ecosystem teeming with birds, alligators, and more, and one of the best places to see cypress knees
👉To Do:
Kayak the Congaree River
Walk the Boardwalk Loop

5️⃣ Mammoth Cave, Kentucky
Explore the WORLD’S longest known cave system
👉To Do:
Tour the cave
Hike the Sinkhole Trail to see what a cave looks like from above ground

4️⃣ Great Smoky Mountains, Tennessee and North Carolina
Beautiful mountain views, fall foliage and waterfall hikes make this the most visited National Park in the US!
👉To Do:
Drive the scenic road to Clingman’s Dome
Hike to Laurel Falls

3️⃣ New River Gorge, West Virginia
Stunning river and mountains connected by the 3rd tallest bridge in the US
👉To Do:
Water water raft the New River
Hike the Endless Wall and Longs Point Trails

2️⃣ Acadia, Maine
Arguably the best national park in the country for fall foliage and a showpiece of coastal Maine
👉To Do:
Hike the Beehive Loop
Visit Jordan Pond
Drive the park loop

1️⃣ Shenandoah, Virginia
Endless hiking options and one of the most scenic drives in the country make this the BEST east coast national park in our opinion. Plus Sarah is from Virginia originally so she might be a little biased. 😅
👉To Do:
Hike the Stony Man Trail, Dark Hollow Falls, and Hawksbill Mountain trails
Drive Skyline Drive

Are any of these parks on your list?

🌅We hiked to a fire lookout tower for the first time this weekend!

Watching the sunrise during this hike was the perfect way to start a Saturday morning 🤩

💚Always practice leave no trace when enjoying the outdoors. Pack out your trash (including your dog 💩), don’t carve or damage any part of the trail (manmade or not), and be respectful of other hikers.

📍Devil’s Head Lookout
🌲Pike National Forest
🥾2.8 miles
📈866 feet of elevation gain

👉Just over an hour from Denver, the Devil’s Head Fire Lookout Tower is one of the most unique day hikes we’ve done in Colorado. The trail is relatively short with a steady incline the entire way, making it a manageable challenge. There are several picnic tables along the way if you want to stop for a break or to just enjoy the views.

‼️Tip: If you go on a chilly day or for sunrise when it’s still cold out like we did, bring a pair of gloves to make holding onto the metal railings more comfortable on your way up!

Shoutout to for posting about this hike last week and reminding me that I have had it pinned on my map for years. 🙌

Have you ever hiked to a fire lookout?

👉These places are worth the extra planning!

🤯After traveling to all 50 states, we’ve had to learn (sometimes the hard way!) that certain parks and hikes in the US require a permit or reservation in order to visit.

📍Havasupai, Arizona
- 10 mile hike required each way
- Campground Permit or Lodge reservation required year-round from havasupaireservations.com

📍Rocky Mountain National Park, Colorado
- Bear Lake Road Timed Entry Required 5am to 6pm (or without Bear Lake road 9a to 2p) May 24-October 20, 2024 (check recreation.gov in 2025 for new dates).
- TIP: Visit outside of those dates/times if you can’t get a reservation!

📍Yosemite National Park
- Reservations Required Spring through Fall, dates vary (check recreation.gov)

📍The Wave (North Coyote Buttes), Arizona
- Permit available by random lottery and required year round
- Lottery available on recreation.gov 3 month in advance, or 2 days prior in Kanab or Page
- TIP: These are EXTREMELY difficult to get! Try South Coyote Buttes for similar views and a less competitive lottery.

📍Maroon Bells, Colorado
- Parking and/or shuttle reservation required May-October
- Reservations available from aspenchamber.org
- TIP: You can bike in to avoid the reservation system altogether

📍Mount Blue Sky, Colorado
- Timed Entry required when the road is open (summer) on recreation.gov
- ALERT: Mount Blue Sky scenic drive is closed until 2026
- Fun Fact: This is the highest paved road in North America, taking you all the way to the summit of a 14,000+ foot peak!

📍Cadillac Mountain, Acadia National Park, Maine
- Reservation required May 22-October 27 recreation.gov
- Fun Fact: This is the location of the first sunrise in the US during the summer months.

📍Angels Landing, Zion National Park, Utah
- Permit required year-round and available by random lottery on recreation.gov 3 months ahead or 1 day prior

📍Arches National Park
- Timed Entry reservation required April 1 to October 31 on recreation.gov between 7am and 4pm

Have you ever been to a national park or hike that required a reservation?

If you’re looking for a hike that still has fall colors on Colorado’s Front Range, look no further than Eldorado Canyon State Park!

We hiked the Rattlesnake Gulch Trail with our friends yesterday and couldn’t believe it was our first time visiting this beautiful park near Boulder. 🤯

💚Always practice Leave No Trace principles when enjoying the outdoors. We saw a few doggy 💩 bags on the trail - please pack it out!

👉Trail Info:
📍Eldorado Canyon State Park
🎟️Entrance $10 (but if you have a CO plate, you might already have a state parks pass if you didn’t opt out on registration!)
🥾Rattlesnake Gulch Loop
📏3.6 miles
📈974 feet elevation gain

👉Fall foliage is winding down here but we’re heading to a place that’s been on our autumn bucket list for years next weekend! Any guesses where we’re going? 🤔
