Urchins get a bad rep when people stand where they shouldn’t (if there is no sand, don’t stand!), but did you know that urchins are actually one of the most important organisms to the ecosystem because they graze on algae? Too much algae is actually a problem because then corals can’t settle on the rock and algae can outcompete the coral! 😱

We had discussions about bleaching, SCTLD, the changes in the reef that fisherman Pepo Guzman has seen in 30 years, and then we snorkeled and took pH and dissolved oxygen levels! Story time! Solitary bar jacks hovering over the reef do not act this friendly, but when in a school, they change their behavior! Today’s appearance of a school of jacks was so enchanting. Such a common fish that makes for a fun time when it is schooling! Have you ever seen a school of fish? 📸: @crystalclearvieques

Equipment problems are the worst. Just when you think you’re about to have the best snorkel, problems keep you from having a good time! 🤦‍♀️ Not all problems are so easily solvable, but a broken or missing snorkel keeper is a piece of cake! Solutions: ➡️ Use a hair tie or rubber band in place of the snorkel keeper. ➡️ If you don’t have a hair tie, put the snorkel on the inside of your strap, next to your head! With hard snorkels, this option won’t be so comfortable. Have you ever had gear malfunctions or missing pieces keep you out of the water? SHARKSUCKERS! “Pesty” little fish from the remora family. They stick to turtles, sharks, fish, rays, and even humans whether they are wanted or not! 😂 I tested how dedicated this sharksucker was to sticking to me by petting it - it didn’t seem too disturbed! At different ages, sharksuckers play different roles. Their primary diet, especially when adults, is the fecal matter of their hosts!! 🤢😱 📸: @crystalclearvieques #vieques #remora #suckerfish

Crystal Clear is an eco-tourism operation in Vieques, Puerto Rico. The owner, Sarah-Elise, has been living in Vieques for five years, constantly advocating for ocean awareness and conservancy. The company teaches about the ocean and Vieques with every activity that they do, including collaborations with The Vieques Conservation and Historical Trust. Crystal Clear’s mission is to positively impact the environment by frequently cleaning up the ocean and teaching others how to have only positive interactions with the marine environment.
