e diagnosis is an approach to coaching that "offers a chance to normalize success, measure potential and create a shared vocabulary for discussing basic human capacities." The system of positive diagnosis begins with recognizing capacities (strengths, interests and resources); assessing life satisfaction and psychological well-being; developing future orientation via pathway thinking (creative and focused on solutions) and finally scoring self-knowledge and values. The ultimate goal is to develop specific self-actualization behaviors: experiences of flow states that represent total absorption and selflessness; make daily choices that move one toward growth and away from defensiveness; have knowledge and the ability to listen to ones's true self and foster honesty; a deep sense of understanding of one's mission, destiny and primary relationships; an ongoing dedication to personal growth even if this means difficult practices and choices; setting up peak experiences in part by understanding what to avoid in one's weaknesses and lack of potential; engaging in elf-reflection to better understand one's preferences, identity, behavioral learning, bad habits and other aspects of self; and finally "resacralization," that is, breathing a sense of wonder, sacredness and true understanding into one's perception of the world, relationships and actions.

Carl Rogers used to say that psychologists had the most important job in the world, because ultimately, what we need more than new discoveries in the physical sciences are better interactions between human beings.

The good life is a process, not a state of being. It is a direction not a destination.

Bored or stressed, they are simply our kids.

Many traditional public schools do not offer much in terms of autonomy and do not allow students to learn at their own speed.

The regiments often undermine students’ inclination to pursue topics that interest them and deeply engage them.

The grading systems used in most schools further discourage them from self-directed learning that is born out of enjoyment of the process and passion for the subject matter.

Develop a passion for learning. If you do, you will never cease to grow.

Have you ever been “healed” by a long conversation with someone where you were given full attention and felt the other person really listened to you without judgment?

Has a particular relationship made you feel normal, lighter, or good about yourself again? Chances are this happened in an environment that was trusting, open, and frank.

'''The world is your kaleidoscope, and the varying combinations of colours, which at every succeeding moment it presents to you are the exquisitely adjusted pictures of your ever-moving thoughts.

You will be, what you "will" to be.
Let failure find its false content,
In that poor word "environment,
But spirit scorns it and is free.

The human will, that force unseen,
The offspring of a deathless soul,
Can hew the way to any goal,
Though walls of granite intervene.'''

Be not impatient in delays,
But wait, as one who understands.
When spirit rises and commands,
The gods are ready to obey.'''

I propose we celebrate close and supportive relationships today as they have been found a leading contributor to overall reports of life satisfaction. Relationship between social connection and happiness has been popularized by personalities like Brene Brown who says that connection is why we're here and that it is what gives us meaning and purpose in life. Ed Diener and Martin Seligman did a research paper called “Very Happy People” where they interviewed people about their levels of happiness and found that very happy people tended to have rich and satisfying relationships. Compared to people with average levels of happiness, very happy people spend little time alone, according to Diener and Seligman. They explained that social relationships form a necessary although not sufficient alone condition for high happiness and claimed that if a person does not have strong social relationships they are not likely to be a person who can be characterized as very happy (Diener, & Seligman, 2002).

The Art of Synchronicity

Synchronicity is a concept developed by psychologist Carl Jung to describe a perceived meaningful coincidence. He argued that events in our lives may be connected by meaning and as such need not have an explanation in terms of cause and effect. And therefore liberating some of us from falling victim to circumstances.

I too choose to believe that we can forge meaning out of seemingly unrelated events in our lives by weaving them into stories about ourselves and the world around us and thereby creating our reality. Story telling is a big part of who we are, so here is a story I like to tell about me which explains how I find synchronicities in my life.

My mother named me Beata but it was not until I took Latin in high school that I learned the meaning of my given name. To “beatify” means “to bless, make happy and ascribe a virtue” and so I like to reflect on my life in terms of being blessed, my lifelong pursuit of happiness as well as my strife towards cultivating virtues. Seeing this as synchronicity gives me a sense of purpose and helps me persevere in challenging situations. After all we live in the world of watered down values where many suffer from the sense of being trapped in the existential vacuum.

I could tell you plenty about the road that got me here: daughter of polish immigrants, I finished college, got married, had two kids and a corporate career. I believe however that how I describe and therefore define my past is very important and so I choose to see everything I’ve been through as a blessings that shaped me into who I am today. And so I see a synchronicity between the meaning of my given name and why I choose to be grateful and count my blessing these days instead of complaining about my circumstances and commiserating.

For the same compelling reason I have embarked on a journey of self-discovery that led me to a new definition of happiness. As my name calls me to think about what it means to be happy, that too becomes a synchronicity that I can’t seem to escape. I have chosen to switch careers recently, go back to school and become a well-being and happiness researcher. Today I am a positive psychology practitioner and I coach, consult, mentor, teach and research optimal performance, optimism, resilience and motivation.

But the story of my life would not be complete if I didn’t look into the future. And here I am reminded (also by the meaning of my given name) about the importance of the noble pursuit of cultivating virtues. It gets me thinking about how I will be remembered and the legacy I want leave behind making this the greatest of all the synchronicity linked to my name as it defines my core values and the direction I chose for my life. Aristotle tells us that “We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence therefore is not an act but a habit.”

So I would like to leave you with this question: can you see any synchronicities in your life? And if not, can you imagine how you could benefit from giving it a chance?
