It’s a beautiful day and we’re happy to be back. Ring the bell!
Experience the rustic Captain's Quarters or charm of The Sullivan upstairs at the historic Captain Bennis House. The Capt. The house was built for Spiro V.
Built in 1875, it overlooks Frenchman Bay on the Schoodic National Scenic Byway near Ellsworth & both locations of Acadia National Park. Bennis House, built in 1875, is located in Sullivan, ME about 4.5 hours north of Boston by car. Bennis and his wife Elizabeth Hannah Simpson where they raised their family. It remained in the family for 143 years until the home was purchased in 2017 by David & Carol Eddleman.

Sullivan bound with a necessary stop for wine and dinner.
Project completed. Both of the parlor bay window roofs were definitely in need of TLC.

Stayed a few nights
"Our stay in the Captain’s Quarters was peaceful and cozy — the perfect place to return to after a day of exploring Acadia National Park and Bar Harbor. The home’s character and history made the space truly special. David and Carol were so responsive when we reached out to them. I would highly recommend to anyone who prefers a unique and homey place to stay rather than a hotel room!"
We are located on the byway on this beautiful stretch of the coastline.

This is such a great video. Thank you for posting it Lynn Dunbar. We have heard the stories about the sounds the singing bridge made from Jen Simpson and her family but never got to hear it ourselves, until now!
Hear the "song" of the Singing Bridge of Sullivan, Maine, which was removed in 1999.
We are lucky to know so much about the history of the house and the Bennis family. The captain's wife Elizabeth died in 1929 and with son Fred and daughter Ida still living at home, they apparently made the decision to keep the Sullivan house as a summer residence and spend their winters in Florida. Fred requested a quote for a sun porch and soon thereafter the work began to build it. In 2021, a project to restore the doors and framing was completed and now the sun porch is our favorite place to be on warm summer afternoons!
The degeneration of the captain's eyes was first mentioned during his time serving in the Civil War (1861-65) and later got so bad that he had to accept a supervisory position with the Ward Line after serving as captain for many years.
He used the second floor of the carriage house as his home office which is why the two story space has been named the "Captain's Quarters". You will find vestiges of earlier times when it was used to store the horse and buggy and has the feel of being inside a large cabin on a ship. It's our largest space to rent and can comfortably accommodate up to four guests.

"The Sullivan Upstairs" is officially a guest favorite! The old world feel, the 1930s bathroom fixtures, Second Empire windows, and great views of Frenchman Bay have made this second floor suite a welcoming place to return to after a day exploring our beautiful area. Take a look at our unique and quirky space that comfortably accommodates up to three guests.

The partition wall between the kitchen and sitting area was removed to create a large open space with lots more light. It's called "Around Back", a two floor apartment space on the back side of the carriage house that can accommodate solo traveler or worker. It's Rosa Rugosa time at the Captain's Quarters!
Start to finish, the Costco DIY shed kit had a few expected and not so expected challenges, and then add in the rainy weather. But with some help from a Good Samaritan and a neighbor friend, it’s done.
On another gray wet day, in our warm and quiet parlor, reminiscing about Deer Isle in June 2006 when it rained for 14 days and nights.
Five o’clock on the sun porch.
The hummingbirds have found their way back to Sullivan.
We have power!
Lost power overnight and it’s still out and still windy. Be safe and stay warm and dry.
