LET’S TALK ABOUT BANKING

If you’re coming to Big Corn Island, there is just one bank here.

A lot of people get too nervous carrying lots of cash on them and they want to be able to pull out money as needed.

There are 2 bank machines through a door to the left side of the bank building, and then there’s the in-person banking option if you need to talk to someone during the day. Saturdays are half days (morning), and Sundays the bank is closed.

Cash can be withdrawn from the machines or in the bank as US dollars or cordobas. If you try one currency and it doesn’t work, sometimes the machine has run out of actual cash and hasn’t been refilled yet, so just try again and request the other currency.

It’s important to know that in order to withdraw cash in person through the bank tellers inside the bank, your bank card needs to be a debit Visa or debit Mastercard type of card. You’ll also need to have your passport.

And if anything has happened to the chip in your card, it won’t work in the ATM machines.

We’ve seen more than one traveller stuck, with no cash, because they haven’t been able to get access to their money in their bank account.

Most businesses here do not accept credit cards, interac, or electronic payments. (Unless expat-owned, if they use payment apps.)

Tips:

Before leaving home to come here for your aMAIZing Corn Island vacation, make sure to have bank accounts set up at multiple banks at home, so you have more than one bank card to try.

Make sure your bank cards are the Visa/MC debit type of cards.

Protect your bank cards from being demagnetized.

Wash your hands before handling your bank card. Sunscreen, dirt, or even perfumes/bug spray on your hands can interfere with the chip.

Some travellers have had some success with using their PayPal account or a money app like Remitly to send money to other travellers to pull out money for them. It can be pretty scary to not have access to any money and have no way to get around on your vacation, no way to pay for your hotel & food, and no access to money to get home again.

Be prepared, have multiple ways to access your money, and safeguard your cards! 💳

Happy “Lover’s Day” and Day of Love & Friendship! ❤️💕

Over time, this day has been embraced by various cultures around the world, each adding local flavor.

Traditions

Gift-giving: Similar to other countries, Nicaraguans exchange gifts such as chocolates, flowers (especially red roses), and cards to express affection.

Poetry: Poetry holds a special place in Nicaraguan culture; thus, writing and reciting poems can be a part of the celebration.

School Activities: Schools often organize activities for students that include sharing small tokens of appreciation among friends.

Romantic Dinners: Couples may opt for a romantic dinner at home or at a restaurant.

Community Events: Some communities or organizations may host events or dances to celebrate friendship and camaraderie.

What People Do

“What happens when we lift a starfish out of water for an impromptu photo session?

All over the body of starfish are papules called dermal gills. Carbon dioxide gases are exchanged for oxygen between the coelomic liquid of the starfish and the water. Essentially, it’s how they breathe, like having hundreds of tiny noses all over your body.

As fresh air is toxic to starfish and they can’t hold their breath for very long, each time they’re lifted out of the water for a photo op, they are drowning and suffering from a build up of carbon dioxide.

It’s the equivalent of someone filling your lungs with water for a little while and then emptying them again. It’s not a good day out. 😔

When this is done repeatedly, it’s a flip of the coin as to whether the poor creature can die from drowning or the stress of being semi-drowned so many times.

Wildlife are not our playthings. Just because a creature is slow enough to be caught by human hands, that doesn’t give us the right to do so, and the social media attention gained certainly does not justify the harm caused to the critter.

This is an act we’re all guilty of at some point. What was happening to that animal in the moment didn’t cross our minds.

But now we know better, so we must do better.

Look.
