During the 70’s and 80’s, before the end of the Cold War; Büchel Air Base was home to the Jagdbombergeschwader 33 (JaboG 33 for short, or Fighter Bomber Wing 33 in English) of the German Luftwaffe and the 7501 Munitions Support Squadron (7501 MUNSS), Operating Location Charlie (OLC) of the 2184 Communications Squadron (AFCC) Which included the TROPO site off base and Communication Center on base.
Büchel Air Base was home away from home to a lot of US Service members. I think it’s safe to say we all look back with longing. For the majority of us Büchel was one of our first assignments with the USAF, which left a lasting impression. I know for me it was my best assignment for a lot of reasons. I am in contact with more folks I knew at Büchel (and the surrounding area), than I am throughout the remainder of my 20 years. We can never turn back time; but we can enjoy our memories, and the contacts we have. Büchel was a treasure; we were too full of life to realize just what we had.
