An Elegant Seed Disperser: The Andean Mot Mot

Feast your eyes on the Andean Mot Mot, a dazzling bird native to the Andes Mountains. With its turquoise head, emerald throat, and rusty chest, it's a true avian jewel. But this beauty is more than just a pretty face – it's an ingenious seed eater!

Unlike many birds that swallow seeds whole, the Andean Mot Mot has a unique method for consuming its food. Their large, powerful beaks are specifically adapted for cracking open tough waxy palm seeds. Here, in this photo, you can see the Mot Mot enjoying a nutritious meal.

But the process is more interesting than you might think! The Mot Mot won't simply gobble up the seed. Instead, it will perch its seed on a branch and repeatedly whack it with its beak until it breaks open. This fascinating technique allows the Mot Mot to access the delicious insides of the seed, a nutritious source of food.

Andean Mot Mots play a vital role in the ecosystem by dispersing the seeds of the wax palm tree. As they break open the seeds to eat the insides, they drop the remaining seed coat to the ground, potentially helping new wax palms to grow. During my frequent visits to the Highlands of Chingaza, I’ve come across the Andean Bear a few good times. Be it a lone male, or like in this case, a mother with cubs. This is the only species of bear present in South America, and its population is classified as vulnerable due to the loss of habitat, so each individual is precious. It is believed that around 60 bears live on the Paramo de Chingaza, and if you visit this National Park and happen to stumble upon one of these creatures, please allow it some space as to not disturb its feeding or nesting habits.
