Dakotas Generate Millions of Dollars for Beekeepers

Scientists with the U.S. Geological Survey, University of North Dakota and North Dakota State University quantified the economic benefit of grasslands to beekeepers in North and South Dakota. They found that annual beekeeping revenue increased by $7,525 per 10 square kilometers in healthy grassland ecosystems. They also looked at the non-market value of grasslands to migratory birds and found that bird populations increased in grasslands by 2-7% per 10 square kilometers.

Getting honey from the hive to the table is a sticky business!🍯

It may be more simplified if you’re only harvesting from one or two hives, but across the board—and especially for commercial beekeepers—it’s no easy task.

We’re sure you’re familiar with that sinking feeling of going out to check your honey supers, only to find that they’re empty. You’ve probably experienced the frustration of having the uncapper jam, the extractor give out, or maybe the gut-wrenching tragedy of an entire pallet’s worth of honey ooze out onto the floor! And if that wasn’t trying enough, there comes a moment in each honey bottling session where that pristine jar just isn’t lined up well with the bottling tank, resulting in honey spilling in all the wrong places.🤦‍♀️

It’s another classic example of “nothing worth having comes easy.”

When you consider all the effort it takes to get it, it’s no wonder we get so excited about honey prices, supporting American honey producers and beekeepers, and keeping our bees healthy!

There’s often some humor to be found in the ups and downs of the process, and beekeepers definitely know a thing or two about laughing through the hard times.

Support an American beekeeper today and take home some of the season’s first jars of honey!🍯

Crops and orchards rely heavily on honey bee pollination, but did you know that grasslands provide essential nectar sources for honey bees too?🧐🐝

A recent study conducted in the Dakotas shows that grassland conservation increases annual beekeeping revenue and migratory bird populations!

Commercial beekeeping in North and South Dakota plays a vital role in honey production and agriculture across the country. Healthy grasslands provide abundant pollen and nectar sources for honey bees and offer the perfect homes for many bird species.

However, much of the grassland in the Dakotas is being converted to row crops. And while we all agree that row crops are important, this transition is economically detrimental to the beekeeping industry.

“It’s important for people who may never set foot on the prairie to understand the value of grassland in storing carbon, feeding livestock, improving soil health and water quality and providing habitat for bees and pollinators,” Clint Otto, US Geological Survey scientist.

Habitat loss 🎯

South Dakota is the second-largest honey producer in the nation. But last year, honey production in the state fell dramatically.

🚨Today, the U.S. International Trade Commission has unanimously voted in favor of the American honey producer in the Raw Honey Anti-Dumping Duty Orders case!🍯

The U.S. International Trade Commission agreed that dumped imports of honey from the countries of Brazil, Argentina, India, and Vietnam are injuring the U.S. honey producer and beekeeper. The decision will be transmitted to the Commerce Department, which will issue antidumping duty orders shortly. In addition, the Commission reached an affirmative critical circumstances determination against Vietnam. This means that U.S. Customs will collect antidumping duties on entries going back an additional 90 days prior to the preliminary antidumping duty determination—from August 28, 2020, forward. This is an important additional finding, and one that the Commission rarely makes.

These results should continue to ensure that
the American honey producer gets the fair prices they deserve.

Usually, when the price of something goes up, we aren’t too thrilled about it. But not this time!

American beekeepers and honey producers do a job that can’t be done by just anyone. Beekeepers devote countless hours and years of their lives to maintain healthy hives. They deserve fair prices for their honey.🍯

The ongoing Raw Honey Anti-Dumping Duty Orders case has shown positive results in this area. Honey prices are rising!

The final hearing for this case was on April 12th and the final vote is scheduled for May 11th.

We still need your support in this fight! Donations are needed to cover necessary legal fees. Join the effort today!
