Anti-immigrant candidates do not represent the working class

In advance of the Local Authority and European Parliament elections this week, Dublin Communities Against Racism (DCAR) and Communities Against Racism in Ireland (CARI) issued this message to voters :

On Friday 7th June Local Authority and European Parliament elections are taking place across Ireland. There are over 200 candidates standing for election who can be described as anti-immigrant, racist or far-right. Some are describing themselves as Independent, while others are associated with political parties or alliances. Aside from their anti-immigrant rhetoric, the one thing they all have in common is that they do not have the best interests of our communities at heart. None of these charlatans have put forward any real solutions to tackle the major issues affecting both rural and urban communities - the housing, accommodation and homeless crisis, a not fit for purpose health service, lack of community facilities, failure to tackle drugs & crime etc.

Their only agenda is to promote hate and to scapegoat all 'foreign' people for problems which have been created solely by our Government parties. By distracting attention away from these issues and from those actually responsible they are providing an invaluable service to the Government parties. It is also worth noting that over the past year the majority of their political targets have actually been the opposition parties and progressive Independents, once again providing an invaluable service to the Government parties, and almost certainly guaranteeing the continued dominance of Fianna Fail and Fine Gael and their economic agenda in the coming years.

People in our communities across the country are rightly angry at the Government over many issues, and the completely chaotic nature of the Immigration process (serving neither the best interests of new arrivals or existing residents) has raised tensions. However, the opportunistic intervention of racists and far-right agitators does not sit well with decent residents, regardless of their concerns. These agitators, including prominent candidates, have never made any positive contribution to our communities, and in fact many have a history of drug dealing, violence, anti-social behaviour and other serious criminal activity. Some are driven by personal ambition, over inflated egos, while others are pure grifters and motivated by financial gain.

As we have already stated "the one thing they all have in common is that they do not have the best interests of our communities at heart".

Neither DCAR or CARI are endorsing any political party or independents in the upcoming elections. We are calling on all voters to look closely at who is standing, what they represent and what they offer to benefit all within our communities.

A vote for the Government parties is a vote for things to stay the same.

A vote for the frauds promoting hate and division is a vote for things to stay the same.

Please look towards progressive candidates who will represent your community and will genuinely challenge the political establishment who have created all the challenges our country is facing.
