Did you know that many US based medical insurance companies will not cover you while traveling outside of the US? Don’t take my word for it. This warning appears on the travel.state.gov website:

“We strongly encourage you to obtain traveler’s insurance, including medical evacuation insurance, before traveling outside of the US. The Department of State does not pay medical bills.

Be aware that U.S. Medicare/Medicaid does not apply overseas. Most hospitals and doctors overseas do not accept U.S. health insurance. U.S. citizens with medical emergencies can face bills in the tens of thousands of dollars, with air ambulance service to the United States in the range of $30,000-50,000.”

Today is Rare Disease Day. Most of you know that I am a full time, full service Travel Advisor. I am also a full time, full service care giver to my 16 year old son, Graydon. Graydon was born with a rare genetic condition called 18q-. Over the years, this has affected our lives in many ways. He exclusively uses a feeding tube for nutrition and is wheelchair bound. These things make it extremely difficult to travel with him. One of my passions, as a Travel Advisor, is to make travel more accessible to families with children who have special needs. Along with my personal experiences, I am also a Certified Autism Travel Professional with IBCCES. That's so very true with my job. I love opening Facebook and seeing my client's photos, enjoying themselves on a trip I helped them plan. But, there's a very special place in my heart for those who are traveling with loved ones who have special needs. These needs can range in severity and complexity but I will always try my best to make it happen for ALL families. I strive to continue to learn how I can improve, so this morning I completed the training to become a Special Needs Group Certified Accessible Travel Advocate. Day 1 in Florence. After a 5 hour flight delay in DC that caused us to miss our two trains from Rome to Florence (always purchase travel insurance)… we made it! An actual real key at our hotel!
