There are many ways to tell important stories. That's why storytelling is the first art. They take whatever form their creator chooses. Their substance and truth, needs no gilding of the lily. No apology for being interesting. I really like the minimalist approach of this exhibit. Manages to be bigger than life, using very few props or artifacts. And we cannot forget history. My parents and grandparents went through the Dust Bowl and they told a lot of stories about that. But it took me going to New York to really appreciate those Dust Bowl days. That led me to the great songwriters like Woody Guthrie and Lightnin’ Hopkins. Lightnin’ told the story from the black point of view. That led to Mississippi John Hurt and Mance Lipscomb, those folk-blues guys I really related to, because they had a fingerpicking sound and a story.

Our best advice for enjoying yourself in Amarillo? Be curious. Whether that involves dining, entertainment, or finding a comfy place to lay your weary head, we’ve got your comfort and enjoyment in mind at Curious Amarillo. We’re bullish on local, or as we like to call it, “Amarillo Genuine”. And to whet your curiosity, and maybe even your appetites, we’ve begun posting information about some of our own favorite places to eat, explore, be entertained, and places where one can delve a little deeper into the local culture. You might say that we’ve already been curious on your behalf.

The neon signs of corporate food chains and hotels are readily visible as you drive around town, but as we’re assuming you deserve something different (better), we don’t even mention them. Our dining suggestions focus on smaller locally owned and operated restaurants, where the owner or manager is on site for most or all of the time, who cares about customer satisfaction and quality product. Occasionally, we add a regional chain to round out our homegrown suggestions, or suggest something in nearby towns. Overall, we make our suggestions based on their dependability, classic local flavor, comfort and hospitality. And unless you’re venturing out of town, nothing will be further than twenty minutes from your doorstep, whether it’s an obscure corner of Old Route 66 or right downtown in an area currently being revitalized. “You can’t get lost, you’re already here!”

Seasoned “highway travelers” ourselves, we know how difficult it is to decide whether or not to venture away from the familiar sea of neon that defines most modern day travel. To that end we suggest only places we believe are worth the “risk”, where we believe that you’ll be “Texas Welcomed” regardless of your background, ethnicity, religion or other distinguishing factor which might result in poor service or access. Despite our best efforts, we do occasionally disappoint. Should things go awry for you via any of our suggestions, we hope you’ll share the experience with us so we may explore it ourselves, perhaps helping to address the issues and adjusting them for future situations. We can always do better. So let us know.
