Salt Island, located southeast of Road Town in the British Virgin Islands, is named for its historic salt ponds. It's most famous for the RMS Rhone, a Royal Mail steamer that sank in a hurricane in 1867. Many of the crew were laid to rest in a mass grave, marked by a circle of stones on the island.

Salt Island, once known for its salt harvesting tradition dating back to Queen Victoria's era, revived the custom in 2015 when a pound of salt was presented to the Sovereign by the Governor. This rekindled tradition continues to this day, reinforcing the island's historical significance.

Sea Turtles are here to stay! This summer, Palm Beach County had an all time record for sea turtle nests in Florida. The majority of the nests belong to loggerhead turtles, but green and leatherback turtles also nest there— all of which are considered vulnerable or endangered species.

Did you know that Humpback whales’ current population has rebounded from 10-15,000 at its lowest to nearly 80,000? This news is a phenomenal achievement for conservationists. Humpback whales were one of the first species to be protected under the Endangered Species Act in 1973. With continued efforts, we hope to see their population maintained to nature’s need, and other species to come off the endangered species list.

Shipwreck treasures have been recovered in the Bahamas from a wreck dating back in 1656. “Using remote-sensing technology, such as sonar and magnetometers, Allen Exploration tracked “a long and winding debris trail of finds” scattered over a 13-kilometer stretch of ocean floor, founder Carl Allen added in a statement.”

Mermaid’s Chair located on St. Thomas’ west coast is a stunning double sided beach that separates the Atlantic Ocean on one side and the Caribbean Sea on the other side. It’s accessible by sea, but as it’s surrounded by rocks and a temperamental tide, it’s probably best accessed by land through the private community called Botany Bay as all USVI beaches are public.

Because it’s difficult to get to, Mermaid’s Chair is a hidden gem in the USVI. It has a gorgeous double sided beach (that disappears at high tide) and hidden tide pools that are the perfect place to unwind and float, as long as the tide is low.
