CHOIRS, CONCERTS & SHOWS IN VANCOUVER
There are lots of fabulous choirs and other performing arts groups in the Lower Mainland. We went to two choir performances and a Jazz concert this past weekend and all were fabulous. To learn about other events coming up in the weeks ahead, see our article at https://vancouversbestplaces.com/entertainment/vancouver-shows-and-entertainment-calendar/
The concert in this video clip was with the Laudate Singers, Paragon Singers, a Baroque Orchestra and conductor Lars Kaario at West Vancouver United Church on Saturday. Aren't they terrific! We'd never been to one of their concerts before, but are so glad we did!
On Sunday, we also saw the EnChor Choir at Pacific Spirit United Church in Vancouver. They were also exceptional. Whereas the concert on Sunday featured Baroque classics by Bach and Handel from the early 1700s, the EnChor Choir sang classical tunes as well, but also some folk and contemporary pieces (including one each by Sting and Coldplay).
Also this weekend, one of us went to the concert at the Annex in downtown Vancouver with the Vancouver Chinese Music Ensemble. It was Jazz and our staff person and his family loved it! They said the music was awesome! The concert was part Vancouver's Asian Heritage Month celebrations and featured local musicians as well as a touring band from Korea.
There are more concerts coming up soon with other fabulous choirs and music groups including Chor Leoni, the VAM Symphony Orchestra, United Voices Choir, Vancouver Oratorio Society Choir and other groups.
In addition to choir concerts, in May there are circus shows, a PAW Patrol Live event and live theatre shows (including Mary Poppins at the Massey Theatre). As you'll see in our calendar, there are also live music events with Jazz.
The Lower Mainland is full of talented musicians. Check out some of these groups, experience new forms of music, and see what you like!

CONGRATULATIONS SUN RUN RUNNERS!
What an incredible day for a race! Wasn't it nice out there! Even the dinosaurs had fun! Now that you're trained and in tip-top shape, what's the next event you're going to do? Don't stop now! Running is so much fun, and so good for you too! For a list of other races, see https://vancouversbestplaces.com/events-calendar/vancouver-running-races/
This video shows what the Vancouver Sun Run looked like today. Were you one of the tens of thousands of people wearing a fancy blue shirt today? Know anyone who did? Do you recognize anyone in the video? Did you see the dinosaurs?
There are lots of running races in Vancouver over the course of the year, and a number of them are extra fun (and not nearly as crowded as the Vancouver Sun Run).
If you want to do a family-friendly, non-competitive run, ones to check out include the Big Jungle Run (in May), Big Superhero Run, Big Pirate Run, Big Halloween Run and Big Elf Run, plus a couple of other great events in the Big Fun Run Series.
Try Events is another awesome series of runs which includes fun ones (like the Rubber Ducky Race) and tasty ones (like the Vancouver Chocolate Run). More serious runs with Try Events later this year that you can start training for now include the Boundary Bay Marathon (which also has 5K, 10K and half marathon options) and the Vancouver Historic Half (with its 5K, 10K and half marathon routes). All of these events are terrific, and good for people of most ages and abilities!
You've done the Vancouver Sun Run! Way to go, but don't stop there! Sign up for your next race soon! With most races, the earlier you register, the cheaper it is (and the more time you have to train)!

EVENTS AND WHERE TO STAY AT THE SHIPYARDS
Our favourite place to stay overnight in North Vancouver is the Pinnacle Hotel at the Pier. A number of terrific events are happening at the Shipyards this month including a craft beer & music festival, a large coffee-themed event, and birthday celebrations for Dutch royalty. If you plan to attend any of these events and don't want to drive home afterwards, or you just want a mini staycation, consider spending the night at the Pinnacle. For details about the hotel, see our article at https://vancouversbestplaces.com/north-shore/north-vancouver/lower-lonsdale/north-vancouver-pinnacle-hotel/
Lots of fabulous events happen in the Shipyards District on the North Shore. Over the next week or so, for example, there is the Brewhalla Beer & Music Festival (on April 19th), The Trail of Coffee event at the Pipe Shop (on April 20th), and the Dutch Network’s King’s Day festivities (on April 27th). Those are all terrific affairs! There are lots of other great events in the neighbourhood in spring too, including the Shipyards Night Market on Fridays beginning in May.
Want to make a night out of your visit to the North Shore? Don’t want to drive home after a few drinks (whether that be beer or lots of coffee)? Want a staycation in one of the Lower Mainland’s nicest and most interesting neighbourhoods? Then consider a night or two at the Pinnacle at the Pier.
There is so much to see and do in the Shipyards District including shopping at Lonsdale Quay and visiting museums like MONOVA and the Polygon Gallery. There are several wonderful restaurants in the area too, including the Lobby at the Pinnacle and the Pier 7 right on the water!
This video shows scenes from our stay at the Pinnacle last year. It was lovely! As you'll see, the hotel has a really nice indoor pool. The views from upper rooms on the south side of the hotel are also amazing! We give the Pinnacle 5 out of 5 stars for tourists, but also for locals wanting a stay

ABBOTSFORD TULIP FESTIVAL IS HAPPENING NOW!
The Abbotsford Tulip Festival at Lakeland Flowers is an amazing place to admire millions of spring flowers. Even on cloudy and slightly rainy days, it's a wonderful spot to visit! For details, see https://vancouversbestplaces.com/fraser-valley/abbotsford-tulip-festival/
The Abbotsford Tulip Festival is open daily between now and sometime in May (with the final day of the season dependent on the weather). If you've never been before, and you like flowers, you should go! And if you've been before, you should go again! We plan to. The place is like heaven for flower lovers and photographers!
This video shows scenes from our visit to the Abbotsford Tulip Festival on a slightly rainy day early in the season last year (and last year started later than this year because of the cooler spring in 2023).
Even on an overcast day with a little bit of rain, the Abbotsford Tulip Festival is a wonderful place to be! The flowers and their colours are amazing!
Not only is the Abbotsford Tulip Festival massive, with millions of tulips to see over the course of the season, but it's also the closest tulip festival to Vancouver. It's well worth the drive to see!
The Abbotsford Tulip Festival costs just $8 on weekdays when you buy your tickets online at least a day in advance, or $15 for Saturdays and Sundays. If you pay for admission on the day at the gate, it'll cost more.
Season passes start at $50 and they are good for the entire Summer Flower Festival season that runs for a number of months. With the season pass you can also get five sunflower stems every time you visit during the sunflower season later in the year! That's a good deal! It's also nice to visit the tulip festival more than once, so you can see how the fields of tulips change over the course of the season. If you're a photographer, it can also be nice to go at different times of the day.
