CHOIRS, CONCERTS & SHOWS IN VANCOUVER

There are lots of fabulous choirs and other performing arts groups in the Lower Mainland. We went to two choir performances and a Jazz concert this past weekend and all were fabulous. To learn about other events coming up in the weeks ahead, see our article at https://vancouversbestplaces.com/entertainment/vancouver-shows-and-entertainment-calendar/

The concert in this video clip was with the Laudate Singers, Paragon Singers, a Baroque Orchestra and conductor Lars Kaario at West Vancouver United Church on Saturday. Aren't they terrific! We'd never been to one of their concerts before, but are so glad we did!

On Sunday, we also saw the EnChor Choir at Pacific Spirit United Church in Vancouver. They were also exceptional. Whereas the concert on Sunday featured Baroque classics by Bach and Handel from the early 1700s, the EnChor Choir sang classical tunes as well, but also some folk and contemporary pieces (including one each by Sting and Coldplay).

Also this weekend, one of us went to the concert at the Annex in downtown Vancouver with the Vancouver Chinese Music Ensemble. It was Jazz and our staff person and his family loved it! They said the music was awesome! The concert was part Vancouver's Asian Heritage Month celebrations and featured local musicians as well as a touring band from Korea.

There are more concerts coming up soon with other fabulous choirs and music groups including Chor Leoni, the VAM Symphony Orchestra, United Voices Choir, Vancouver Oratorio Society Choir and other groups.

In addition to choir concerts, in May there are circus shows, a PAW Patrol Live event and live theatre shows (including Mary Poppins at the Massey Theatre). As you'll see in our calendar, there are also live music events with Jazz.

The Lower Mainland is full of talented musicians. Check out some of these groups, experience new forms of music, and see what you like!

VANCOUVER RAINY DAY ACTIVITIES

It looks like it's going to be a wet weekend. If the forecast turns out to be correct, then you might want see our article about Rainy Day Activities at https://vancouversbestplaces.com/on-a-rainy-day/

Top things to do if it's raining today include attending the family-friendly Koningsdag Dutch King's Day event at the Shipyards in North Vancouver. It's all indoors and under cover! Other fun indoor things to do include virtual reality games with Zero Latency, comedy shows at The Improv Centre on Granville Island, and the multidimensional films at FlyOver Canada.

This weekend there are also terrific outdoor events like Coquitlam Community Fest, Party for the Planet in Surrey and the various tulip festivals in the Fraser Valley. Don't let the rain stop you from enjoying those activities too. Just take your umbrella and raincoat, and boots for the tulip festivals.

There are lots of fabulous indoor events happening in early May as well. There are concerts with the EnChor Choir, Laudate Singers and Chor Leoni. There is also the West Coast Wedding Show in Burnaby, and both Pacific Art Market events and the West of Main Art Walk in Vancouver. Something else to look forward to is the Royal Canadian International Circus. It'll be in Surrey and Richmond between May 2nd and May 20th! Mother's Day is in May too. If you want to treat your mom to brunch, you'll want to make your reservations soon!

Museums are other terrific places to visit on rainy days. There are so many great ones in the Lower Mainland including the Vancouver Maritime Museum, Chinese Canadian Museum, Museum of Surrey, Britannia Mine, 374 Engine Pavilion in Yaletown, and so many more!

Whatever you do this weekend and on other rainy days in the weeks ahead, we hope you get out, have fun, and don't let the rain keep you from having a good time! On the bright side, the region needs some liquid sunshine, and April showers bring May flowers!

INDOOR DUTCH KING'S DAY CELEBRATIONS IN NORTH VANCOUVER

Did you know that the Netherlands has a king, his birthday is this month, and that the largest King's Day celebrations in North America take place at the Shipyards on April 27th? For details about the North Shore event this month, visit https://vancouversbestplaces.com/events-calendar/april/vancouver-koningsdag-kings-day-dutch-celebrations/

Koningsdag, or King’s Day, is a holiday in the Netherlands that celebrates the birthday of King Willem-Alexander. To celebrate, the Dutch Network is hosting free, family-friendly activities during the day on Saturday, April 27th, in North Vancouver. That same evening there's an adults-only party at the Pipe Shop. Tickets for that, however, are already all sold out! You can still attend the free festivities during the day. You don't need tickets for that. You can just show up!

The daytime activities were originally going to happen outdoors in Shipbuilders’ Square. Because rain is in the forecast, however, the festivities are now going to happen under the shelter in Shipyard Commons (which is an awesome covered venue right next to Shipbuilders’ Square). Don't let the rain stop you! It's not going to affect the event! The Shipyards will still be one of the best places to be this Saturday, especially if you like free events and cultural activities.

The free activities happen at the Shipyards on Saturday between 11 am and 4 pm. The Koningsdag celebrations are going to be so much fun! Everyone is welcome!
